We jump onto the bus and the jumped down into a Checkpoint. There were sandbags pilled up and graffiti on every inch of the wall. "That bridge looks pretty far" Ellie says, "We'll get there" I say to her. "Whoa. It's strange seeing a checkpoint with no soldiers" She said, looking at the empty area. "This is what most zones look like. This place has been abandoned for a while now" I mentioned. "Give us our rations" Ellie reads off the wall. "Why wouldn't they give them their food?" Ellie asks. "Sometimes they ran out. Most times they just held onto it".
"That never happened in Boston" She mumbled as I picked up a few screws and bolts. "Trust me, it happened all the time" I say, remembering the days before i'd find my own food. I pick up a note that was lying under where soldiers would sit and record what happens. The note read:
We lost Troy Hill to the most ragtag pieces of
maggot shit ever to carry a gun. Bastards are
cunning, though. They stole one of our mortar
launchers. We didn't stand a chance.
With this and the Strip District in their pocket,
they now control the whole river. Made for a
difficult retreat, there's barely half our squad
left.
I just pray to God that Jeremy and Pam are still
alive. They got stranded on the other side of the
river.
After reading, I put the note back and led through the checkpoint. I read more bold graffiti on the wall: YOU'LL DIE BEFORE WE STARVE. I walked on through the iron sliding doors and out to my empty land. "I hear hunters" Ellie whispers. "Yeah me too. Just keep it down while we're going through this area. Okay?".
"Oh... I'm so fucking tired. We were up all night chasing this tourist" A man moans. "Oh you were part of that? I heard about this". By this it told me there were at least two men out. "Yeah, this one chick, she would not give up. I've never seen anyone with so much fuckin' energy. It took a couple of minutes to snuff everyone else and fucking five hours to hunt her ass down". "Jesus. Sometimes you earn your keep", I listened very closely and figured there was probably one more. "Yeah, I guess. We were about to give up when she started shooting at us. Stupid, she coulda got away. I had two other guys keep her busy, I took out my rifle, lined her little head up in the cross hairs, pow".
Me and Ellie moved forwards, keeping low and quiet. "Damn. Maybe you shoulda kept her. Y'know, made her one of us" He continued. "No way. That girl- she'd kill us all in our sleep". As I moved to the corner I could see one of the men, so I quickly moved backwards, not wanting to create any noise that would inform the other hunters that I was there. As the man came around the corner Ellie hid by me, knowing that she shouldn't get in the way for her own sake. The man nearly turned round so I strangled him, but his 'friend' came around the corner so I had to quickly kill him before he beat me to death.
After that I heard shootings, the other hunter was nearby, and he knew I was around. I quickly wound a bandage around a cut and got my bow and arrow out, the man didn't have time to get his own gun out as Ellie threw a brick at his face, letting me have a clear shot at him. He fell limp on the floor and I pulled the arrow out from his head, putting it back in my backpack.
I could hear more around, so I pulled out my rifle, knowing it could kill them quick. There were more men in a building, I hid outside, listening to where they were and what they were doing. I jumped in the building as one man walked past and strangled him quickly. Another man came, he hadn't noticed his friend was dead yet and he was walking straight at me as I was hiding.
I threw a bottle behind him and as he looked round I strangled him as well. Suddenly a man starting shooting, I looked behind me and saw a hunter with a rifle like mine. I shot him dead after to bullets with my rifle. "Behind you" Ellie shouts. It seems I don't turn quick enough for Ellie as she has already thrown a bottle at him whilst I kill him using my revolver as it has a lot of ammo left for it. I reload my revolver and see two more hunters. I take one down quickly and make time to heal before I take down the next.
As I move on I stumble over another hunter. He takes me by surprise so I don't have time to take out a gun so I reach out a grab a bat to beat him instead. "Holy shit" Ellie says as we hear more of them. I see at least two of them in the same place so I throw a nail bomb, when it explodes one hunter is able to get away from it, but the other gets killed. When the one that escapes runs up to us, I shoot him, missing once and killing him on the second.
I can still hear more hunters, shouting out threats as they see their other dead people. I listen closely, trying to figure out exactly where they are. I decide to go upstairs, figuring that they're either up there or will go up there. As I got upstairs it looked like an old library of some sort.
I see two guys straight ahead, both with guns. I'm about to shoot them when two more hunters aim for me and miss. I then run down the stairs, knowing that i'm outnumbered. When none of the men come down after me, I slowly make my way back upstairs. As I came to the top of the stairs there was a hunter, already got his rifle out, he seemed startled which made it easier to quickly kill him with my pistol. Th rest of the men saw though and me and Ellie had run out of the building all together before we got shot. When I was outside there were more iron stairs which led back up to where the hunters were.
I entered the top floor, staying crouched, and as soon as I saw a hunter I shot him dead. Then two more came and I shot them from a far as well. Around the other side I could see another hunter, he looked angry so he must have seen his friends die. It looked like he was the last one left, but I wasn't going to take any risky chances. When I got close enough I was able to push him to the ground and stamp on his face, leaving him dead.
