I was pretty nervous. Today I was going to meet one of my neighboring countries, Mr. Russia. He was told to be big and strong, and extremely scary. My boss said it was going to be good for both of our countries if we could become friends. But I just didn't know.
I tied my hair and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked pale but it wasn't too bad. I sighed and tried to muster all the courage I had. I stepped out of my room to see my boss waiting for me. We both left to the garden of my house where we were told to meet. My boss led the way.
He opened the sliding door and there were two men standing one next to the other. One of them was average hight but the other, the other was huge! I had never seen anyone as tall. I immediately knew it was him and felt intimidated. Although he was gigantic, he looked nothing like I had imagined. He had shiny blond hair and beautiful purple eyes set on his long and white face. He was wearing a long cloak as well as a pale scarf around his neck.
I stayed behind my boss as he shook hands with the other man. The country kept his eyes fixated on me making me uncomfortable. My boss placed his hand around my shoulder pushing me forward as the other man did the same to the tall nation.
"This is Mr. Russia. Here is China, I hope the both of you will get along well," my boss presented us as if we were children. I reached out my hand shyly and Mr. Russia eagerly grabbed it. His hand was so much bigger and stronger than mine. We let go without a word.
My boss whispered to me saying I should walk around in the garden to get to know Mr. Russia better. I nodded and looked up at the nation. His lips curled up to a polite smile and I quickly looked down to my feet. I motioned him to follow me and he did.
We wandered side by side without saying a word. Needless to say, it was pretty awkward. As we approached a bench near a pond, I decided to speak. "Would you like to sit?" I proposed, showing the bench. He nodded and we sat down on the wooden bench, hidden by tree branches bending over, creating a curtain.
The silence kept on until he finally spoke. "You have very nice garden." he stated with a thick accent looking ahead.
"Thank you," I replied, fiddling my thumbs under my long sleeves.
"It is very nice here. Weather is nice too. You are also very nice," he smiled turning to me. I blushed at the compliment.
"Oh– uh... Thank you," I stuttered, avoiding his eyes.
He turned back and continued observing the life in my garden. Some birds were chirping not too far making it very peaceful and relaxing. I too, continued to observe, but not my garden, his face.
His face was calm, young. His eyes, just as beautiful as they were, had something hidden behind them. Something he locked away. My eyes wandered down and I examined his build. Strong and imposing, but tired. His shoulders were slouched back and his back slightly curved. It looked as if he had been working hard all his life.
He turned to face me and I quickly glanced away, hoping he did not notice me staring.
"Mr. Russia," I said after a while.
He turned to me and answered, "You do not have to call me that, Russia is fine." He smiled warmly and I relaxed a bit.
"Okay, Russia, do you know the Chinese legend about The Red String of Fate?"
He shook his head.
"An invisible red thread connects those who are destined lovers, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break." I recited, watching two birds flying side by side. Russia looked at me interrogatively. His expression then turned into a pleased one.
"And how do they know they have met that person?" he questioned, tilting his head.
My eyes widened and my heart jumped. He looked so innocent and fragile. I pondered a while on his question and finally responded frowning, "I-I... I don't know..."
"Then I shall add Russian ending to your legend. When two lovers united, they feel it in their heart. When they meet, their heart opens and fills body with warm and happy feeling. But not feeling like friends or brother. They know."
I looked at him in surprise, my lips slightly apart. My heart started beating faster and I felt all tingly inside. It was like the words he had said described perfectly my feeling.
"What do you think?" I flinched realizing I was staring at him the whole time I was engulfed in my thoughts.
"I think it is exactly what would happen when they meet," I replied, unconsciously leaning towards him.
"Has China already felt the feeling?" he interrogated, approaching me as well.
I stared into his tranquil eyes. "I, I'm not sure," I voiced, my eye lids slowly closing.
"How about we make sure?" he said, more stating than asking.
I felt his breath on my lips as they were only millimeters apart. Both pair of lips finally skinned themselves only to be interrupted just as soon.
"Mr. China, Mr. Russia! Come, the tea is served," my boss shouted from the other end of the garden. I jolted back, looking through the falling branches to see both of our bosses searching for us. My heart wouldn't stop beating fast and I could feel my face blush a bright red color.
I stood up stuttering, "We– we have to go." I didn't look at him, simply ahead and started walking. Then he suddenly grabbed hold of my wrist, slightly pulling me back as he stood up. He bent down and quickly kissed my lips softly. He looked at me and smiled.
"I know I am sure."
