In a room where the smell of sanitizer filled the air, the sound of beeping machines echoed off the walls; a nurse held a patient's wrist between his fingers. He scribbled short words on his clipboard and smiled down at the old man laying on the hospital bed. "Don't worry Mr. Serra, your heart is slowly readjusting after yesterday's operation. You should be perfectly fine," reassured the young man. The patient slowly nodded and flashed a weak smile. "Of course. Thank you so much Mr. Vargas." The brunet placed the clipboard at the bed's end and started walking away. "Oh! Mr. Vargas! Please give my thanks to Dr. Carriedo!" The nurse cringed and turned around, forcing a smile. "Yes, of course."
He walked out the room and closed the door. He strolled through the halls to his next patient's room. Lovino, the nurse, knocked on the door and slightly opened it. "May I come in?" The patient replied in surprise, "Y-Yes! Of course!" He entered and picked up the sheets hanging on the end of the bed. He read them quickly and started writing. "So... We'll start with a normal checkup then I'll give you the antibiotics for your arm, okay?" The girl nodded fast and sat up straight. "You can stay laid down if you want," pointed out Lovino as he approached with a small flashlight. "Oh, I, uh... Which is better?"
Lovino raised an eyebrow and smiled softly. "The one which you are most comfortable." The girl thought quickly and stammered an answer, "I... I'll stay like this..." Lovino nodded and pointed the flashlight at her right eye, then left. He brought an otoscope to her ear and scribbled down more information. He held a stick on her tongue and examined her mouth. The nurse held his stethoscope to his ears and brought the end to the patient's chest. He then placed it on her back. "Cough, please," demanded Lovino. She did as she was told and he wrote a couple words once he was done.
The dark haired nurse stared at his notes with a confused face. This worried the poor patient. "Is something wrong?" Lovino flipped the pages from the days before and frowned. "I've noticed something. The checkups I've been doing are practically all showing the same symptoms. Your pupils are dilated, you have extreme blood rush to your face, your mouth is dry and your heartbeat is quickened. Is everything alright? Ms. Anderson, are you having an allergic reaction to anything we are giving you? Are you drinking enough water? Is the room too warm, would you like me to turn the A.C. on? If anything is wrong, please tell me. It is extremely important I know everything you're feeling."
The girl's face reddened to a deeper shade of red. She was about to reply but was cut off before she had a chance. "Ah yes! Those symptoms!" Lovino whipped his head around in surprise then made a sour expression. "Dr. Carriedo," grumbled the nurse gripping his clipboard tightly. "I know those symptoms too well, very dangerous indeed," pursued the doctor ignoring Lovino. He sat on the edge of the bed and smirked knowingly. "I'm sure you know exactly what they mean, right, Ms. Anderson?" The older man glanced towards Lovino and the girl followed the gaze. She blushed even more and turned away. "M-Maybe..." The doctor chuckled and stood up. "I just wanted to make sure my dear patient was holding up well, but I can see everything is going perfectly. I'll leave you in the hands of my trustworthy nurse and let you finish then." He patted Lovino's shoulder and walked out. The nurse glared at the man then took out some pills from his pocket.
"Please excuse Dr. Carriedo, he can feel a little too comfortable at times when it's not appropriate," said Lovino as he placed two pills on a small plate with a fresh glass of water. "There, take those now and I'll come back later this evening for your second dosage." Ms. Anderson obeyed and took the pills as Lovino walked to the door. "Ah! Mr. Vargas!" The said man turned around. "Yes?" The girl fidgeted nervously her fingers and sighed. "No, it's nothing, sorry." Lovino nodded and exited the room.
Leaning against the wall was Dr. Carriedo, grinning happily. "Of course, you just had to wait outside the door," mumbled Lovino as he pursued his route without giving the man next to him a second glance. The doctor followed Lovino close behind while he trailed along the empty corridors. "Lovi, from your observation earlier, what can you deduce?" asked the curly haired male. "I already told you, my name is Lovino," spat the nurse. "And your nickname is Lovi, so I shall call you like that. You can call me Toni, if you like!" Lovino shook his head in disgust. "For the millionth time: no. I will not call you Toni or Antonio, I will call you Dr. Carriedo and that is it. Nicknames are not professional."
"Doesn't matter, as long as it's the two of us." Lovino wanted to reply but Antonio left him no chance. "So, what do you deduce?" The green eyed nurse sighed and shrugged. "I don't know. Allergies maybe?" He tugged on his blouse and turned around the corner leading into a quiet hallway. Antonio shook his head. "No! You're a nurse, you should do much better!" Lovino clenched his fists as the older man was starting to get on his nerves. "Well you're the doctor here, you tell me!" retorted the short man.
"Love. It was love, Lovi," answered Antonio raising his eyes dreamingly. "Good to know." Lovino pursued walking without paying much attention to his coworker. "You've never noticed those symptoms before?" asked Antonio with a sly grin. "No. And now leave me alone, I have work to do," declared Lovino, averting his gaze from the doctor.
"Oh really?"
Before he was able to shout at Antonio, Lovino was gently pushed against the wall and the brunet hovered over him. Both his arms were placed at each side of Lovino's head and a knee was blocking the nurse's way out as it was positioned between his legs. The short green eyed man squirmed and looked to his side. Antonio turned Lovino's face back to stare in his eyes. "Because I see those symptoms very often... on you," he pursued slyly. "Your blood-rushed face, meaning your heart beat is fast. Your dilated pupils, your dry lips, inability to speak; all are the symptoms you analyzed, however you still fail to realize you show the same ones. Now how could that be...?"
Lovino gawked straight into the doctor's dark green eyes. He commenced boiling with anger and embarrassment. He violently pushed Antonio away and scurried off, flustered. "It's nothing. And don't ever talk to me again you bastard," snarled Lovino whilst he tried to get as far away from the man as possible. Antonio shrugged smiling while he turned around and walked the other way. He loved to taunt the young nurse.
