A young nation ran up and down a hill fighting an imaginary enemy with his wooden sword. "Ha! You have no chance against me! The great knight!" he hollered, brandishing his weapon in the air, triumphant.
Not too far from there hid another country. He watched closely the outgoing nation. After a while, he resumed his reading about a Norwegian fairy tale. He read, mesmerized by the words and images. He turned the pages and came to the end of the story.
Once he finished it, he sighed, smiling, and observed the last image.
"What are you reading?"
The sudden question startled the small nation and he let out a cry. He turned around and saw the other boy standing behind him. He approached the book which was still on the floor and flipped the pages.
"Aw, I can't read it! What is this?" he complained, trying to decipher the letters.
"I-It's Norwegian," the smaller nation uttered from far away. The spikey-haired boy looked up to the pale one in front of him.
"Norwegian huh? Are you Norwegian?"
"In a– in a way, I guess..." the young country responded shyly.
"Cause I'm Denmark, a strong and mighty country!" he shouted proudly.
"Really? Because, I'm actually a country too. I'm Norway," he confessed, crawling towards the other nation.
"So Nor, what does your story talk about? I don't really understand the pictures either," Denmark asked, turning the pages back and forth.
"Well, uh, it's about a boy who has to guard a hay meadow and one year he finds a horse and tames it. Near the horse he finds a full armor in brass," Norway explained, pointing to the images and turning the pages. "Then the next year the armor is silver then the year after that it is gold.
"The king of the country had a beautiful daughter that he wanted to marry to a worthy man. He said that the man must climb a glass mountain to win her. The princess would have three apples on her lap and whomever would get them could marry the daughter and have half the kingdom.
"The boy goes up the mountain three times, each time in a new armor, and each time the princess gives him an apple. However, he always left before anyone could see him.
In the end, the boy showed the three apples and was able to marry the princess and own half the kingdom."
"Wow! That's so cool! I love this story!" Denmark cheered, holding up the book.
Norway smiled shortly but then went back to a neutral expression. "Yes, it is my favorite story."
"I have an idea! I'll be the boy and you be the princess okay!" the over-energetic boy shouted, his eyes sparkling. Norway wasn't very interested but went along, not wanting to upset the noisy nation. He nodded and Denmark pulled his arm bringing him near a flower patch.
"Here, like this you'll look like a pretty princess!" Denmark said, placing flowers in Norway's hair. The country blushed and felt the flowers in his hair. "You look very pretty!" the spiky-haired nation stated, grinning widely.
The shy nation's blush darkened at the compliment. "Now go sit on top of the hill and I will come! Here, give me these when I come!" Denmark ordered, placing three acorns in Norway's hands. Norway did as he was told and sat on top of the hill. They played out the story in their own way and had a lot of fun. Norway even happened to laugh a couple times.
In the end, Denmark grabbed hold of Norway's hands and looked at him in the eyes. "What are you doing?" Norway asked looking at his hands now bound in the other nation's grasp.
"Well, I'm marrying you!" he stated grinning.
Norway blushed and shook his head, "N-No! You can't do that!"
"Yes I can! You are the princess and I have the three apples. That means I can marry you," Denmark replied stubbornly.
"T-That's not how it works! You can't marry anyone because you have three apples," Norway argued.
"But I don't want to marry anyone, I want to marry you!" the nation pouted. Norway looked at him in shock. He turned to the side, his cheeks becoming dark red.
"T-Then, you can, if you really want too..." he muttered, fidgeting slightly.
Denmark's eyes widened and shone brightly. "Yeah! I, Denmark, make you, princess Norway, my Queen," he smiled, handing the smaller nation a pretty flower. Norway accepted and contemplated the beauty of the flower, pleased. Denmark leaned in and kissed Norway on the cheek. He looked up as he put his hand to his cheek.
"Now we are officially married," Denmark cheered holding Norway's hand. Norway blushed but squeezed the loud nation's hand as he smiled.

The story is a Norwegian fairy tale called The Princess on the Glass Hill. I read the story while searching for an essay and the boy sort of made me think of Denmark and the princess Norway .
Anyway, I hope you liked it. ❤️
