The sun had finally set leaving a trail of outstanding colors behind it. The darkness of the night slowly inched closer and closer to the brightness, engulfing it with only the white sparkle of the stars remaining. England laid his head on America's shoulder as they watched the spectacle.
The countries had hiked up the mountain to be able to spend some alone time together for the arrogant nation's birthday. Well, England had hiked. America had complained the whole way saying an effort like this was going to kill him. His companion had retorted that he had shown him a lot more stamina the other night, so what he was doing there was far from deadly. After that, America stayed silent the rest of the hike.
The blue-eyed man wrapped his arm around his boyfriend and nuzzled closer to him. He made sure to give constant signs of affection knowing the older nation was still hurt by their complicated past. What he didn't know was that England had forgiven him a long time ago and it was only the lack of love that kept him spiraling in the hole of depression.
"I have a surprise!" exclaimed the birthday boy, grinning like a fool. England looked at him questionably and amused. "What is it?" The childlike nation rushed off to grab his rucksack from where they left them. He rummaged through the bag until he found what he was searching for. He pulled out a ginormous box which England wondered how it was physically possible to put it in the sack in the first place.
America opened the cardboard box as he took small steps back to England. He squinted his green eyes and was able to make out what was written on the box. Red, white and blue words were printed on all sides each screaming "Fireworks". The European nation watched America warily as he pulled out a huge rocket. The boy's eyes were twinkling as he unwrapped the colorful objet. "These!"
"Um... America... Are you even allowed to have those?" asked England while the blond man sat down next to him. America laughed and immediately answered nonchalantly, "I don't know, I got these from Mexico, he has a load of them! But doesn't matter, it's just us." England wasn't too convinced but remained silent.
Whistling, followed by an explosion boomed in the sky. Both countries looked up, their faces lit up in amazement. The American colors beamed brightly in the darkness, stealing the spotlight from the stars. The American flag appeared after multiple fireworks followed by hearts, symbols and the date. America's face was glowing as he watched excitedly. His grin was wide and his cheeks rosy. At some point, England ceased to watch the spectacle in the sky and began contemplating the jumpy nation beside him. He observed with a loving gaze, his own smile growing.
The perky blond sprung up and pumped his fists in the air. "Now, it's my turn!" hollered America. He set the rocket down and arranged it's support. England pushed himself off the ground and joined his lover. He peeked over America's shoulder and watched carefully.
"But... Aren't those illegal at your place?" questioned the gent. America pulled out a box of matches and lit one up. "Yeah but who cares! It's my birthday! No one can stop me! I'm the United States of America, they can all suck my Florida if that makes them feel any better!" declared America, hands on both sides of his hips. England glared, his arms crossed on his chest. The western country noticed the hard stare and realized what he said.
"Oh. Um... When I said... I didn't mean... I'm sorry... You know I love you babe," sputtered America, trying to find the correct words to use in order to conciliate the irritated nation. England simply sighed and closed his eyes. "Just... Just get it over with. And for the love of God, be careful." America's face went from worried to overjoyed in less than two seconds. "Thanks hun!" He pulled England close and kissed his cheek.
America lit another match as the one before had burned out. Once the fuse caught fire, the burger-loving country jumped up and ran two yards away from the firework. He looked up to the sky excitedly and saw the other bursting lights. "Wait 'till you see mine, suckers!" cried out the boy to no one in particular. England closely followed and stayed behind America. He watched the fuse burn up with an uneasy feeling.
The blue-eyed man was on the verge of blowing up himself from all the anticipation. His eyes widened and lightened up once the fuse had burned up to the shell.
A huge explosion occurred and sparks followed by smoke blasted in every direction. England crouched down and covered the back of his head. He looked up and saw the rocket shoot right at his face. His heart stopped and he dived to the side. The firework flew upwards and blew up scattering the pigments in the air. The green-eyed blond whipped his head around and glared at America.
"What the bloody hell was that? Were you actually trying to kill me?" shouted England, his face red from anger. The American stared at his boyfriend's head, his lips turned down. The small man felt himself burn up in fury. "What? Answer me! I told you this was a bad idea!" snarled England, standing up. America stayed still, then his lips slowly turned into a smile which he tried to suppress.
"Um... England..."
"Bloody what?"
"You... Your hair... You're on fire babe," sputtered America, his hand hiding his smile.
"Pardon me? I'm on wha–..." The Brit brought his hands to his head and felt heat coming from it. He was literally burning up. He shrieked and waved his hands over the fire trying to put it out. He started running in circles looking for something to help him. He stopped and glanced accusingly at America. "Don't just stand there, do something!"
The poor boy also started to panic but had no clue what to do. He watched helplessly his boyfriend run around and shriek. He then calmed himself down and closed his eyes. He straightened his back and his face was free from any emotion. He took a deep breath. His hand raised and settled over his heart. He tuned out England's screams and opened his mouth, inhaling as much air as he could. And then, he let it all out.
"Oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light..."
