Either you're popular, either you don't matter. That's the way high school sees it. You can get noticed or be ignored. You can have friends or stay alone. Those are the "laws of high school". Everyone knows that every person longs to be popular, but apparently not every one can. You need certain social standards, certain mindsets, basically, being different from the norm will immediately outcast you.
Then again, there are different types of popular. The cheerleaders, the pretty, funny and athletic girls; the jocks, the cool and strong guys; and the ones with a reputation, a scary and awe-striking reputation. In Matthias' school there was one person like that, Lukas Bondevik.
Lukas was popular not for his looks, not for his athletics, and probably not for his brains either. He was known throughout the school due to the things he had supposedly done, due to his salty attitude and snarky remarks. His face was pierced and hair dyed. His clothes were ripped and his shoes were tattered. The way he walked, more like trudged down the halls, instantly pushed everyone to the side to watch in admiration and fear. No one would do what Lukas does, not even the condescending soccer players.
Since the start of the year, the punk student had always been in trouble and often sent to detention. The beginning of the year barely commencing, Lukas had gotten in a fight which earned him his popularity. Making it back from the principal's office with nothing but a warning, the boy became a legend.
Matthias on the other hand was barely noticeable. His big black glasses covering his joyful blue eyes made him easily ignored. His fashion sense wasn't unique either, and as if all that wasn't enough, the blond was a goody-two-shoes with straight A's. The fact that he spent most of his time studying instead of socializing resulted in him not having many friends and being made fun of.
On the first Thursday of the year, he had been bullied because of his glasses and very messy hair. The way he held his books was apparently also a reason why he looked like an idiot. Thankfully, he had managed to get away from them and hide in the bathroom trying to calm down before returning to class. He never saw the bullies again and it was never mentioned.
Although all that didn't matter to him. He was content with his simple high school life. He never had any problems with teachers, had good grades and was a very sweet kid so the students who took time to talk to him really appreciated him. However his calm and monotone weeks were drastically changed after one, simple chemistry assignment...

The whole class had already paired up and the groups moved around to sit next to each other. Matthias sat patiently as he observed who else would be left out. The class soon settled down and Matthias still hadn't made eye contact with any other abandoned soul. He turned to the teacher waiting for his directives. The adult simply shakily pointed to the back of the class. The blond slowly turned around and saw Lukas perched over his sketchbook as he mindlessly scribbled things on the paper.
Matthias immediately spun around and vigorously shook his head. The teacher motioned to the back of the room with a firm gaze. With a loud and exasperated sigh, the blue-eyed teen trudged to sit next to Lukas without making eye contact nor a sound. He sat silently and held his belongings to his chest. The punk boy didn't notice his presence or simply didn't care.
After the last directives, the groups all headed to the lab and began pulling out the chemicals and equipment. Matthias and Lukas were the only remaining in the theoretical room. A huge debate took place in the dorky blond's mind as he pondered whether he should ask Lukas to follow him or if he should do the project himself. He finally decided the experiment was something they had to do together as it would be taken into account of both their grades.
