"Ludwig! Ludwig! Can you believe it? Ludwig! The war is over! The Allies won!" cheered an excited brunet, running through a small Austrian village. The door of a typical restaurant opened and a tall blond poked his head out. He failed to notice the jubilant man coming up to him rapidly and was tackled as he jumped to his neck.
"Feli? What-... What are you saying?" exclaimed the man, patting the short Italian's face trying to figure out his features. Feliciano clasped his hands over the German soldier's cheeks and grinned.
"The war! It's done! Finito! We are safe! You don't have to fight anymore!" he explained, joyful tears rolling down his face. Ludwig frowned and wiped the drops.
"You're crying... Are you alright?" asked the German, perplexed. Feliciano nodded and brought the blond's strong hand to his lips. He kissed them and nuzzled his face in Ludwig's chest.
"Yes! I'm just... I'm just so happy! Now that the war is over you don't have to go back to Germany! You can stay here with us forever!"
Ludwig gasped in understanding. He brushed Feliciano's hair and pondered, a smile plastered on his face. He held back tears and pushed the Italian off of him. He stroked his face and led the boy to a nearby chair. He palpated the wooden stool before carefully sitting in it. Both his hands gripped on tightly to Feliciano's and he raised his head.
"Feli... I... Even though the war is over... I still need to go back to Germany," he declared slowly. He felt the brunet's shoulders droop and his grasp loosen. "But. I promise you Feliciano, I will come back. I will help you with this wonderful restaurant of yours and I will stay by your side forever."
The Italian whimpered softly and dropped to his knees, embracing Ludwig by his waist. The blond wrapped his arms around the boy and rested his head on top of his.
"Feli... Are you sad... or happy?"
The lively brunet raised his head and cupped Ludwig's face, titling his face down to meet his lips.
"I'm both sad and happy. I'm sad you will be leaving so soon but happy you'll come back to me," he clarified rubbing his nose against the German soldier's. Ludwig nodded and rested his chin over Feliciano's shoulder. They remained in each other's arms until the brunet lifted his head in surprise and jumped to his feet.
"Do you hear that? They're playing that song again!" he babbled tugging on Ludwig's arm. The German blond stumbled forward and gripped tight onto Feliciano's forearms. "Let's dance!"
"B-but... I can't dance," remarked Ludwig sadly. The brunet ran to the radio and turned the volume up. He skipped back to his partner and held his hands, placing them around his waist.
"Last I checked, you don't need to see to be able to dance," chuckled the Italian. "I'll guide you. Just follow my steps."
Their pace was slow and romantic. Feliciano held Ludwig around the neck, barely tall enough to lace his arms around the broad figure. Ludwig enlaced the small man dearly and drifted from side to side.
"Love is the strangest thing, No songs of birds upon the wing, Shall in our hearts more sweetly sing, Than Love's old story."
They huddled close to each other and Ludwig lowered his head to press it against Feliciano's shoulder.
"Whatever heart may desire, Whatever lie they say, This is a take that never will tire, This is a song without end."
They danced across the empty restaurant, bodies so close they almost fused together. The pleasant sunlight leaked in from the grand window. People ran, shouted, danced in the streets, happy that the times of war and fear were finally over.
"Love is the strongest thing, The oldest yet, the latest thing, I only hope that fate may bring, Love's story to you."
The wandering couple emptied their minds of what was occurring outside and simply focused on their song and the feeling of their lover in their arms. The sweet melody carried them away into a heavenly place within their small restaurant.

Explanations:
Feliciano is a young Italian boy who moved with his family to Austria and they opened a small business. When the war came, his brothers and grandfather left for the service. He was left alone in that secluded village and worked everyday. Then Ludwig, a German soldier, arrived with his troop and set camp not far away. After the time they become friends than lovers but can not say anything because of their opposing sides and same sex. They bond over the song Love is the Sweetest Thing then relate to the song Whispering Grass and sing both all the time. During an attack, Ludwig gets injured and becomes blind. Feliciano takes care of him and hides him in his house over the restaurant. They live together for a while then the war finally ends and Ludwig has to go back. Then you know the rest.
