Hand in hand with his son, Berwald strolled through the tinkling mall. Christmas lights hung from every rail, poinsettias decorated the floors and a huge Christmas tree stood grand and tall in the center of the mall.
Peter clung onto his father silently. His innocent eyes widened at the sight of each festive figure. His grip tightened each time he was afraid to loose his father in the crowd. The poor child was still under shock from the terrible accident which had occurred a few months ago. His mother had passed away in a car crash, the slippery road the only culprit. Ever since he barely spoke and never left his father's side.
Wanting to cheer his son up, the tall man brought him to see Santa Claus, hoping the old man could help bring life into the small boy's heart. They arrived to the North Pole where a throne stood in the middle. Candy canes stuck out of the fake snow and cardboard Arctic animals were balanced all over. Staff dressed as elves smiled cheerfully and greeted the children. A line of parents with their children waited for Santa to arrive.
A few minutes later the man dressed in red and cotton stepped on the small platform and sat on the throne with a deep and joyful laugh. "Ho, ho, ho! Welcome to the North Pole my children! Step right up one after the other and share with me your Christmas wishes!"
The children cheered and the parents clapped. The elves motioned for the kids to go sit on Santa's lap one by one. Each child posed with a huge smile and a picture was taken. The photograph could be bought at the shack behind the throne. After a couple of minutes, Berwald and Peter were standing in front of Santa. The man had a fake white beard which was surprisingly realistic, actual red cheeks, a round stomach and a warm chuckle. His eyes were a dark blue with specks of violet sprinkled throughout the iris. Small round glasses slid down the bridge of his nose, completing the outfit.
It took a little bit of time to persuade Peter to let go of his father's hand but the Santa managed to lure the boy onto his lap. He held the blond reassuringly and rubbed his back. The kid remained silent and watched with big eyes the bearded man facing him.
Santa held his free hand out for Peter to take it. The blue-eyed boy hesitated but placed his small fingers over the man's gloved hand. Santa grinned and gently squeezed the tiny hand. "My dear boy! How are you feeling right now?" he questioned to lighten the mood. Peter glanced in the man's eyes and then stared at his feet.
"I'm okay," responded the child.
"Just okay? It's almost Christmas! You should be over joyed! Look at these bright lights, the sweet candies and ginormous presents, aren't you excited?" roared Santa with a smirk. Peter blushed and giggled. "You know, you can trust Santa. I'll always be there if you ever need help okay? Don't hesitate to write me a letter in case you want advice, the North Pole is always open for mail!"
Peter nodded with a shy smile. Santa rubbed the kid's back and pursued, "You know you can ask old Santa Claus anything you like, go one, tell me your Christmas wish." The blond nibbled on the bottom of his lip and thought. His eyes lit up and he gently tugged on the old man's sleeve. He cupped his hands around Santa's ears and began whispering.
Berwald stood on the side with a couple elves next to him. He clutched Peter's coat while biting his thumb. He was reassured his son finally spoke to someone after all that time. It was the first time the kid opened up and actually giggled. It was very touching for Berwald and he was very grateful to the bearded man.
Santa chuckled and held Peter tightly. The boy cuddled to the man and blushed. "That's one big wish for such a small boy, you know that?" Peter nodded with a playful smile. Santa ruffled his blond locks and grinned. "I'll do my best, as long as you promise to be a good boy, got it?"
