The King demands this, the King demands that. No matter what, no matter when, and no matter how, the King must have his needs satisfied without delay. Because of this, Lukas spent his days running up and down the castle stairs from the second the King opened his eyes in the morning to the moment they closed again at night. Lukas was the King's personal servant boy, meaning he had to stay close to the monarch at all times, had to run any errands he might ask of him, and help him with his daily business. It was a very tiring and sometimes diminishing job, but it also had its upsides, one of them being an adequate living situation with food and a room.
With an empty platter in his hands, Lukas closed the King's chamber doors and marched through the long, winding corridors of the castle. He crossed paths with several maids who were bringing the king his clean robes for the day. They nodded their heads at him while cheerfully greeting him. The blond smiled in response before continuing on his path. From the thin glass windows, Lukas could peer down into the court where most of the castle employees were bustling since early that morning. It was a clear day so much of the staff took advantage of the sun to dry clothing, groom the horses, or sweep the castle stairs. A lot had to be done on a daily basis to keep the kingdom running, and it all started with taking care of the castle and the King. This hefty responsibility was well carried by each servant, maid, cook, and stable boy who each completed their tasks with great honor and deftness.
Gripping the silver platter tightly, Lukas arrived at the end of the hallway and hurried down the large staircase leading to the first floor of the castle. Halfway down, he passed by a small group of the King's knights. They were wearing their chain mail armor with long, navy capes around their shoulders. The tall blond of the group caught Lukas' gaze and smiled. The servant boy halted his descent to politely bow his head at the knights.
"Valorous morning Sirs," he said respectfully.
"Good morning Lukas," replied all four handsome men.
"Where art thou en route to in such a manner?" chuckled the blue-eyed blond.
"The King finished his breakfast and requests his medicine. I must go fetch the vial at the physician's quarters."
"Come Matthias, let Lukas be, he hath much to do," said a knight, tugging at Matthias' arm so he would walk up the stairs.
"Oh I am certain he is capable of sparing us a second, indeed not?" The tall blond was grinning ear to ear while staring at Lukas playfully.
"Unlike thee, good Sir, I have got an employment which requires me to exert myself strenuously every day."
The knights all chuckled in amusement. They watched as Matthias took a defensive stance.
"Now that is unfair Lukas, we work very hard to protect the King."
"Yes, when the castle is in danger or when the frontiers need defending. Otherwise, thou spendst thy days idling around the castle and making thyself a winter coat at the tavern," teased Lukas as he poked Matthias' stomach.
The men laughed at their friend's expense. Before the knight could defend himself, his companion grabbed his arm again.
"He speaketh the truth, Matthias. — And Lukas, we are very grateful for the work thou dost everyday. — Come now, we must let him return to his task unless thou desirest the King in a foul mood for today's assembly," urged the dark-haired knight.
"Well all right," acquiesced Matthias, following his group up the stairs. He gave Lukas a tender smile as the blond waved and trotted down the stairs.
"Farewell Lukas," said a knight.
The servant boy turned around as he reached the last steps. "I will see ye knaves at the gathering. Or have ye forgotten I am present everywhere the King is?"
