Iceland's POV
World meetings can be very boring. It's all about paperwork, border lines, wars, money... I really hate them. For a country like mine we don't get too involved with the others so it's pretty much pointless attending these meetings. But it's the duty of every nation's personification to represent the country.
After a while, I learned some tricks to make the hours more interesting. I began bringing paper and crayons to doodle, snuck in some books, made awful puns under my breath, and observed the other countries. The last activity is my favorite. Every nation has their own quirks and habits which makes all so entertaining.
It's also funny to notice how some countries act differently with each other, either due to a conflict, or something more personal. One day, and I think everyone noticed, the Italian brothers had literally exchanged personalities after a European party. Romano was bright and almost cheerful whereas Italy was gloomy and complained about back pains. Spain and Germany said nothing the entire day simply avoiding everyone's gazes. Something like that also happened to England and America. One day they were at each other's throats and the next England even praised the western country.
My favorite pair to observe is Denmark and Norway. During the world meetings we are all seated in alphabetical order. Somehow, both Nordics end up right in front of each other, the oval table separating them. I'm sat not too far from Denmark and positioned perfectly to see their ridiculous routines.
Whenever Denmark gets bored, which happens easily and frequently, he slides a pen to Norway. At first, the calm nation doesn't react but the pens keep coming, sometimes even balls of paper or rubber bands. At some point Norway reacts and throws something back in his face angrily. Surprisingly, not many nations notice any of that, each busy with their own games.
After catching Norway's attention and officially distracting him from the presentation going on, Denmark begins to mime things. He moves his arms around and exaggerates the movements of the mouth. Norway is very unresponsive but occasionally writes on a piece of paper for him to "fuck off". Then Denmark starts doodling things and showing them to Norway. Most of his lame drawing are horrible puns which, if lucky, earn a soft chuckle.
The rest of the meeting pursues with them sharing drawings and balls of paper from across the table. It's so absurdly pathetic but ridiculously adorable.
Today the routine began as usual, first catching Norway's attention. Then Denmark started creating animal shapes with his hands. They were so awful Norway literally facepalmed so hard a couple of his neighbors turned around to look at him concerned. This time Norway was the one to throw the paper balls first. It landed straight into Denmark's eye making him stumble backwards and almost fall off his chair.
I had to cup my face to suppress my laughter and so did Norway. Once back up, Denmark held one hand above his hurt eye and stared at the country in front of him, offended. The blond simply shrugged and stuck his tongue out. Denmark quickly responded with pulling both his cheeks and wiggling his tongue out his mouth. Norway pulled his nose up and crossed his eyes, biting his lower lip. I stifled a snort as they continued pulling horrible faces at one another.
Denmark pulled his ears and opened his eyes really wide, his eyebrows frowning. He smiled creepily which made Norway lose his shit. The blue-eyed nation blushed and chuckled. They stared at each other for a short moment then Denmark started mouthing words again.
I couldn't see clearly since I was on the side but guessed what he told Norway, the shades of red his face went through proving me right. The blond covered his mouth and gazed away embarrassed. I felt jittery inside watching them, it almost felt wrong spying on them that way. But despite the awkwardness I kept on observing.
Getting over his shyness, the Nordic glanced back at Denmark who was grinning fondly. He mouthed back "me too" and turned away trying to hide his face. Denmark rested his chin on his hands and smiled dreamingly.
I covered my eyes with my hand and sighed exasperated. "They are so lame and immature," I groaned under my breath. I peeked over one last time and saw them staring at each other dreamingly, cheeks bright red and eyes twinkling. I clasped my hand back over my face feeling myself redden. It was so embarrassingly cute to watch them like that.
