Violet: What is this invention?
Edith: It's a cellphone Granny.
Violet: A what?
Edith: It's a portable telephone.
Violet: What does that mean?
Edith has added Darrel to the conversation.
Edith: I'm trying to explain to Granny how a cellphone works.
Violet: And what is it exactly? Why did you get it for me?
Darrel: Everyone has cellphones at Downton, Granny.
Violet: Even Carson?
Darrel: Yes, even Carson.
Violet: I can't imagine that man with anything modern.
Darrel: Well he has one, and they're quite useful.
Violet: Why?
Darrel: You no longer need to send telegrams, you won't have to ring for your maid and you won't need to be 'tortured' by the actual telephone.
Violet: I'm not sure I like this better. It moved last night.
Darrel: It probably just vibrated because of a notification.
Violet: Are you speaking in a foreign language today?
Darrel: I'll pop round later today, and I'll show you how to use it.
Violet: That won't be necessary. This...thing is going straight into the trash.
Darrel: Give it a week, then you can do what you want with it.
Edith: I agree. The world is changing.
Violet: Yes, but why must we change with it?
Darrel: Because otherwise we'll be stuck in the past, and Downton will fall.
Violet: Well, I'll keep it for a few more days. But only to be able to prove you wrong.
Darrel: Do you know how to admit defeat Granny?
Violet: No actually, because I've never lost.
Darrel: 🙄
Violet: What...what is that?
Edith: It's called an emoji Granny. You have them as well.
Violet: I think this cell phone is quite enough. I'll learn about that random face...later.
Edith: We'll see you at dinner Granny.
Violet: Indeed. Now, how do you leave this....text?????
Darrel has removed Violet from the conversation.
Edith: She's gone to throw out the phone, hasn't she?
Darrel: For sure.
