I woke up at 6:00am that morning to the sound of Dad getting ready for work. He was blow drying his hair in the bathroom next door. As I walked downstairs, I came to find mum cooking breakfast.

Dad then came downstairs, grabbed his keys and left for work kissing mum and I as he headed out the door. Dad worked for a big chain of Hotels and always left early in the morning.

After dad had left, I found that mum had gone all out, making pancakes, eggs, bacon and toast for breakfast. Usually she puts boxes of cereal on the table and tells me to make it myself.

After breakfast I went upstairs, got dressed in my new uniform and waited in the car for mum to finish putting her make up on.

When mum finally finished putting her make up on and we drove off to my new school. I was really nervous and had butterflies in my stomach the whole drive there. When we got to All Saints Anglican School mum wouldn’t stop crying as it was my first day at my new school.

She made me stand out in front of the sign and take a picture, which was really embarrassing as everyone walked pass me laughing. Great first impression huh. Finally I said goodbye and found Erin waving out the front of the school.

“Hey, boy am I glad to see you” I sighed in relief.

“You too” Erin greeted, pulling me in for a hug.

“Here, we’ll find my friends there and I’ll introduce you to them” She explained as she pulled out of our hug and pointed into the distance.

We stopped about 10 seconds later to a big group of girls

“Kate this is, Danielle, Mariah, Jess and Taylah” Erin said pointing at each girl sitting in a circle. I smiled shyly as they each greeted me with a friendly ‘Welcome’ and smile.

“Hello” I responded.

They were all quiet nice as we sat and talked about a lot of stuff while waiting for the bell to go. The plus was we all seemed to all have something in common. When the bell rang we got up and the whole year went to the hall.

Once there, we got handed our school diaries and time tables whilst the assistant principle, Mrs Megan talked about a new term at school. She kinda scared me. The way her eyebrows were arched and that bob . . .

After the whole school assembly finished we all went outside and compared our time tables with each other. I was in Erin’s homeroom whilst Danielle and Taylah were in the same homeroom and Mariah was with Jess.

Although Jess and Mariah weren't in any of my classes, I was in the same class as Erin, Danielle and Taylah, PLUS I would still Jess and Mariah at lunch. The rest of the day flew by so fast. I also found out that Cody was in all my classes too, except for homeroom. My classes were great and the teachers made me feel right at home.

A couple of times during 4th period (English) I felt a blush creep to my cheeks when my gaze locked with Cody’s. He was sitting directly across the room from me and made me wonder why he was looking at me.

About half way through the lesson I brushed it off and didn’t notice it as much as the class worked on their creative writing piece. I love writing, it sort of takes me to a whole different world full of my dreams and where things go my way for a change.

When the bell went for Lunch I found Erin waiting outside for me with . . . Danielle? . . . I think.

“Hey is it okay, if we go to the canteen before we meet up with the others?” Erin asked.

“Yeah I need to go to my locker anyways, how bout I catch up with you, same spot as this morning?”

“Yep, cya” Erin said spinning on her heel with danielle.

Now where was locker 248? I pulled out a little map that the school gave me but to be honest it wasn’t really working. I think it was next to room 3? But where was that? I sighed and started to wonder in what I hoped was the right direction.

About 15 minutes passed and Lunch was going to finish in another 15. I sighed and pulled out half of my sandwich. This school was way too big.

“Need help?” I heard a male voice ask behind me. I sighed in relief. Thank the lord.

“Yeah actually do you know where locker 248 is?” I said as I turned around to face those same blue eyes that I fell in love with on the beach . . . wow how cliche is this . . .

“Yeah next to room 3” He chuckled lightly.

“I knew it” I sighed taking the little map out of my pocket “Do you know where exactly would that be?” I questioned, smiling up at him innocently.

“Those maps are useless, here how bout I take you there before we’re late to math” I felt a blush arise as he said it. I followed his lead and felt myself smile.

“Thanks” I mumbled, gratefully.

“So what made you choose to come to the Gold Coast?” Cody asked as we wondered through the school.

“Um well my dad has always been traveling with his job, he works for a chain of hotels across the globe and my mum and I got dragged along with him, to be honest I never really wanted to come . . .”

“And now?” He wondered aloud.

“Yeah I like it but I miss my friends in Hawaii . . . I’ve known them since I was 7 and it feels weird to be so far away from them . . .” I trailed off sadly as memories of my times with Sarah came to play in my mind.

“Do you have any siblings?”

“Nope just me, myself and I” I smiled. I didn’t really mind being an only child. Yes sometimes I am lonely I must admit but I like being by myself, I can be really independent when I want to be.

“Well here we are locker 249” Cody sighed, with a sympathetic smile.

“Um thanks, but I am actually locker 248” I giggled bending down the the locker 2nd from the bottom. I put away my books I didn’t need and quickly organised my locker to my liking.

“Any day now Kate” Cody chuckled, I looked up at him with a shrug and continued with my organising. I stopped as I heard a bell ring.

I jotted up and bashed my head on an open locker.

“Ouch!” I flinch taking hold of my head.

Cody laughed of course which made me go a deep shade of red.

“Thanks for your concern” I laughed as I slung my bag over my shoulder.

“S-sorry” He smiled trying to hold back the laugh. He shook his head playfully, running a hand through his blond curls.

“Lets get to maths Kate” I nodded and followed after Cody.

As we walked along the long hallways of the school, I picked up that Cody was really liked by everyone. It didn’t surprise me either, he was nice, and friendly. He didn’t seem like the type to be overly popular either, just the sporty type who hanged out with everyone.

“Cody, you ready for state swimming” I paused and looked directly at a male teacher, he had a whistle around his neck, and was wearing a school sports jersey and shorts.

“Yea coach, I can’t wait” Cody replied excitedly.

“Who’s this?” Coach pointed to me, Cody looked to his left and smiled brightly at me.

“New student, this is Kate Brown” Cody introduced me.

“Hello Miss Brown, everyone calls me coach. I’m the swimming coach” He smiled proudly. I nodded and smiled back politely.

“We gotta go coach, we will be late for maths” Cody quickly rushed out as he took my hand and sprinted towards the classroom we were meant to be in.
