"TYDE!!!" I yelled as I took the blade out of Gray's hand and put it on the sink. I screamed Tyde's name once again as I searched his room for something to stop the bleeding. I found his exercise band on the floor and quickly grabbed it. I ran back to the bathroom and saw Gray struggling to grab the blade. He got a hold of it and put it to his wrist.
"No! Stop!" I gripped my hand on his arm and attempted to get the blade but he held it tight.
"Grayson stop!" I was finally able to get it out of his hand. I took the exercise band and started to wrap it around his arm.
"No... I wanna die. Let me die!" He screamed almost out of breath. I felt a tear fall down my cheek.
"What's wrong with you?" I said tightening the band. I looked him straight in the eye. There was so much pain behind his red, teary eyes. I heard the door bang open.
"What's wrong?" Tyde said trying to catch his breath.
"Isn't it obvious? Call 911!" I yelled to him. He took his phone out of his pocket and dialed the number.
Gray was still looking at me but the light in his eyes was starting to fade.
"Hey. Hey, Grayson, keep looking at me. Okay? Keep looking at me. We're getting help." I said trying to calm him down. I put my hand on his cheek and he placed his hand on top it. There were tears streaming down my face now but I continued to stare straight into his eyes. After a minute he said something.
"I'm... Sorry." Then his eyes slowly closed and his body went limp. The hand he placed on top of mine fell to his side and onto the floor.
"No no no no... Grayson. Grayson!" He shook him a little to see if he would gain consciousness. He didn't. His body just sat there. I felt for his pulse and it was there. It was weak. But it was there.
I looked back at Tyde and he was ending the call.
"The paramedics are gonna get here soon." He told me. I nodded and Mrs. Hunter came to stand by his side. Her hand covered her mouth when she saw Grayson unconscious. Sage and Peyton also entered the room.
"Mommy. What's wrong with Gray?" They kept asking.
"Tyde. Take them downstairs." She said. He nodded and held their hands and started walking out of the room.
Mrs. Hunter kneeled beside me in tears. Her hand shook as she reached out to hold his.
I heard sirens and quickly got up and ran downstairs to open the front door. A group of paramedics and policemen were running toward the house. I waited for them to get a couple steps from me and started to lead them upstairs to where Grayson was. I stood to the side and watched as the paramedics pushed Mrs. Hunter to the side and began to check on Gray. They replaced the exercise band I put on him with something else and also put a bandage on his arm.
"Let's go!" A paramedic yelled. Him and his team lifted Gray onto a gurney and rushed him back downstairs. I followed but was stopped at the bottom of the stairs by a police officer.
"Do you know where his mom is?" He asked.
I pointed upstairs and he jogged pass me. Tyde was already being talked to by an officer by the front door. I walked up to him and interrupted their conversation.
"Where are the twins?" I asked him quietly.
"They're in your room." He said and then went back to the officer.
I fast walked to the guest room and opened the door to see the two girls with their dolls on the bed.
"Hey. What are you guys doing?" I asked with a fake smile as I wiped away my tears.
"Playing." One of them said.
"Can I ask you guys something?"
"What?" They said at the same time. They looked at each other and giggled. I smiled.
"How can I tell the difference between you two?"
"Oh! Peyton has a birthmark on her cheek!" Sage said.
"Yeah. And Sage has one on her chin!"
They pointed at the marks. I looked at the clock. 8:21.
"Can I play with you guys?" I asked.
"Yeah! Here." Sage handed me a doll, "You can be the mommy and me and Peyton will be the little girls!" I took the doll and sat in between them.
We played for a while and during that time I didn't think of my mom or Gray. I was just focused on the girls. They were the sisters I never had.
Someone opened the door. I looked over my shoulder and I saw Mrs. Hunter.
"Time for bed girls." She said softly. The girls whined and kept asking for 5 more minutes but Mrs. Hunter wouldn't budge.
"Come on." She gestured for them to exit the room. Peyton got off the bed and walked to her mom with her head to the ground.
"Wait! Mommy! Can we sleep with Bree?!?" Sage said quite loudly.
Mrs. Hunter looked at me. "Would that be okay?"
"Yeah. It's perfectly fine. The bed is pretty big." I gave a gentle smile. Peyton jumped back onto the bed and cheered with Sage. They lifted the blankets and shuffled around whispering to each other. I got off the bed and talked to Mrs. Hunter.
"Thank you." She said pulling me into a hug.
"No problem. Do you know anything about Grayson?"
She shook her head. "I'm going to visit him now. If you need anything here... is my number." She took a piece of paper out of her pocket and handed it to me.
"If you need anything just give me a call or ask Tyde. He's upstairs."
I nodded and she thanked me one more time and left the room.
The shuffling on the bed stopped and I saw the twins looking at me.
"Is Gray going to be okay?" Peyton asked me. Her cute little smile was gone and was replaced by a small frown.
I hesitated to answer because I didn't want to say something wrong. I didn't know if he was going to be okay. The cuts in his arm were pretty deep.
"He's going be fine." I finally said getting into the bed. The girls scooted over a little.
"You promise?" Sage asked. Another challenging question that I didn't know how to respond to. I thought about what to say but the word just came out on its own.
"Promise."
