Ya main bitch, Alyssa
"Hey, Alyssa, mom said you have to wear a dress to the dinner thing tonight," Josh stated as he was fixing his tie. "She said something about you need to look good because you'll make her look good. I don't know, some shit like that."
Of course. I don't mind wearing a dress but my mom always needs everything to be perfect. She's always expected the four of us to be absolutely perfect in every single way because if we were perfect, it'd make her seem perfect. It'd make her look like the greatest mother in the world or some shit when that's far from the truth.
She only got her shit together a few years ago, before that, she was a complete mess. When my dad got locked up, my mom was depressed. She wouldn't eat, sleep, she could hardly take care of us. She was always in her room, leaving us to do things on our own.
It got so bad that my grandma had to come and stay with us for a little bit to help us out by feeding us and bathing us. At the time, I was too young to understand anything that was happening.
Then, my mom met Cameron's baby daddy and I guess she got out of her little funk. They dated for a few months and then when she found she was pregnant and she told him, he left her. Instead of going back to her depressed ways, she got her shit together.
She signed up for college and she worked hard every single day to achieve something in life. I remember she told me that she didn't want to be in her thirties working at McDonalds and that she needed to get it together. She studied criminal justice and boom! Now she's one of the head lawyers for her firm.
"Ah, fuck," I heard Derek sigh next to me. "I don't have a tux or anything."
"It's fine, you can borrow one of mine," Josh shrugged. "Oh, and mom said that you can't tell anyone else about your pregnancy tonight or tomorrow because you'll take away her spotlight. I know, that's bullshit but it's what she said."
I scoffed at his last statement. Typical. "Okay, I wasn't planning on telling anyone else because it's none of their business. Plus, I'm pretty sure our grandparents will tell every single person because they're very excited. Anyways, before the dinner, Derek and I are going to visit dad. You want to come?"
"Nah, I'm okay," he shook his head with a shrug. "I saw him yesterday and I don't want to be in your way when dad meets Derek for the first time. I've got to go, I need to see if Kathy needs help with anything."
I just realized, we've been here about four days and I still haven't had a full conversatin with her. We exchange quick hello's but that's about it. I don't really think she's the talkative type, in all honesty. She seems quiet and to herself.
I watched as he walked out of my room and I turned to look at Derek. "Are you ready to go? We need to leave soon because we need to be back in time for the dinner which is in three hours."
"Yeah, lets go," he stated as he grabbed the keys to my car off the dresser. Thank God I had two cars when I lived out here in Omaha. I don't really know why I did but I wanted the both of them so my mom bought me both.
We walked down the stairs hand-in-hand and before we could make it out the front door, my mom stopped us. "Woah, woah, woah. Where are you going, Alyssa? The rehearsal is in three hours! You're my maid of honor, you need to be there on time."
