Sophie / Juliet
"Soph..." Juliet looked across at her sister as her hands were on the steering wheel and eyes on the road.
They were on the way to Juliet's parents evening and neither of them had really spoken since their argument. They had exchanged small conversation around the house because they had to but other than that, it had been kept to a minimum.
"Yeah?" She briefly turned to look at Juliet before looking ahead once more.
"I'm sorry okay... so so sorry. I didn't want to lie to you, I just knew you wouldn't let me go and I couldn't miss it. I know it's stupid, doing all of this for some boy but..."
Juliet was quickly cut off when Sophie spoke over her with an understanding smile now across her face, one that filled Juliet with some relief.
"Honestly, it's okay. I'm not mad anymore, I get it. I've been there, heck I'm still there... just please don't do it again."
Sophie knew she couldn't be mad at Juliet when she could see some of her behaviour in herself. She didn't want her sister doing things just to please a guy yet technically she was doing the same thing. She was 21 now; she was supposed to have this a bit more figured out wasn't she? Yet instead, she was wasting her time on a guy who wasn't willing to the put the effort in for her. However, her sister was new to all of this and she was still in that stage where it seemed like this guy was the best she was going to get from life when in reality he was so far from it.
"I won't, I promise. You're my sister; I never want things to get like that between us."
"It's complicated, I know." Sophie nodded her head. "With mum and dad not being around, I feel like I need to take their place but I know I can't exactly do that. I also want to be that fun sister that you can look up to again but it's difficult when I want to set a good example too."
"I know you do but sometimes you let the parental side take full force."
"I just don't want you making the same mistakes as I've done."
Juliet knew where Sophie was going with this and the one person she had in mind. She was second guessing her choices on being with Aaron. She was questioning herself in regards to whether this was right for her. She didn't know anymore.
When they had first met, it had seemed perfect however, she was suddenly realising that maybe she was now letting it consume her life. She was at Uni, she was supposed to be living this experience for herself but instead she was so wrapped up in some boy. It was such a high school mistake.
"I won't, I'll make my own mistakes and then you can be there to give me the sisterly hug when I need it." Juliet tried to make Sophie realise that she couldn't wrap her up in cotton wool and protect her from everything. "And I want to do that for you too. So if things are not good right now Soph, you don't have to remain in them. You know you can walk away from something, even if it feels like you can't."
They were both talking in code but they were both talking about Aaron. Juliet was a lot wiser to the situation than Sophie realised and she couldn't help but smile.
"I know. I've got a whole lot of thinking to do."
"Which you can do in bed tonight but first, we have this dreaded parents evening to get through." Juliet chuckled as Sophie pulled up outside of the school.
...
An instant chill was sent down Sophie's spine as she walked through the doors of her old school. It wasn't because she had a bad experience being here, it was more due to the fact that everyone knew who she was and knew their story.
