(Rachel's POV)

People assume I first met death when William died.

These people are wrong.

But I met death long before this. I met death when I was four-years-old.

"Rachel won't be able to reach!"

"I will so! I will so be able to reach Dustin!"

"You can't even say my name," he laughed, "It's Justin! You never get it right,"

"That's what I said!"

"No you said Dustin!"

"Leave her alone Justin"

William took my hand and guided me towards the queue to the ski lift.

"Daddy said to stay off this lift - daddy said to only go on the pull-along-chairs!"

The pull-along-chairs were the ski lifts that never left the ground. You held onto rope and they pulled you to the top of a small slope.

"Those are boring," Justin sighed, "Do you want to be boring Rachel?"

"But daddy said..."

"He said you could go on these chairs Rache" William promised, "You just have to sit next to me, okay? See that little boy over there? He is four too. But he's going on the big kid lifts because he is with his big brother too,"

I nodded my head surely, knowing that William would never lie to me.

"Will you sit with me too Randy, will you be my chair buddy?"

I always had a buddy when I was four. I had a school buddy, a playground buddy, a crossing buddy, you name it and I had a buddy assigned to me for it.

"No Rache - I'm six now. I can't sit with you anymore, you're to young"

I stared at my brother mouth wide open, stomping one of my pink snow boots.

"But that's not fair, I can't be six for two more years!"

"And by then," Randy faced Justin, flushed in the cheeks, "We will be eight!"

Justin reflected his enthusiasm and walked forwards with Randy, just as the little boy and his big brother were swept up by a chairlift.

"You're next boys – move forward"

Randy took his place, but Justin waited.

He turned back to me.

"I don't mind that you're four Rache," he told me, "I don't even mind that you can't say my name right. So we can take the next chair ride together if you like. I'll even hold you hand like Will does?"

I remember that William laughed and he told Justin to hurry up. His chair was coming too soon.

"Bye Rache"

"Bye Dustin"

"You said it again!"

"Justin – go!" William warned, "Or you will be riding with us!"

Soon Justin was gone too, and he was up into the sky with Randy.

"You ready little one?"

I nodded.

William took my hand and led me forward.

"Look straight ahead Rachey,"

I concentrated my attention in the direction that Will had pointed me and soon I felt my body lift as William placed me onto our chair. Will lowered the bar and told me not to hold onto it.
