(Randy's POV)
There are these fish in the ocean called pilot fish. They congregate around sharks backs. They feed off of their skin. They keep them clean.
I remember watching them swim at an aquarium. I remember asking William why any fish would choose to swim so close to their most dangerous predators.
"It's simple," he said, "They are afraid of dying"
That didn't make sense to me. If they were afraid of dying then why not swim far, far away from the shark.
"Because they are safer if they swim on the sharks back. The shark keeps them safe"
I asked why. Surely a fish would be much safer swimming off in open water then clinging to its predators skin.
"Sharks kill threats Randy. They don't kill the useful"
I understood who they useful were. They were the fish that cleaned the sharks back. But who were the threats?
"The threats are the fish that choose to swim in front of the shark. They challenge the shark's reign. They don't surrender to it. Sharks hate threats. Shark kill threats"
"So then why don't all fish swim on the sharks back?"
"Some fish are smart. Some fish know that they are better off dying while enjoying life, then living in a life of capture"
I watched the fish that swum on the sharks back. When the shark turned left so did they. When the shark swam faster they sped up too. They had no purpose. They had no control. Their identity was lost. They were simply an extension of the shark.
"William - I would rather die as a free fish then live someone else's life"
"Yeah - me too"
William told me something else.
"Do you want to know a secret Randy?"

"Yes"
"The free fish don't really die first. Yeah, the shark eats them long before he eats his servants, but the conformed fish always die first. They die the moment that they give up their freedom"
William said that the free always outlive the captured.
I could see from the gloomy way that fish were swimming that he was right. Those fish were dead and breathing. They gave up their lives when they became fearful of death.
"William?"

"Yes?"
"Can a fish ever beat a shark?"
"Yeah. Anyone can beat a shark"
"But how?"
"It's easy. You can beat a shark by not being afraid of the shark. A shark's greatest weapon is fear. Those who don't fear it - can beat it"

(Rachels POV)
"What was that?!!!"
"My foot!"
"Oh.... Sorry..." I swam, "Oh my goodness what was that?!!!"
"Your foot..."
"Oh... sorry..."
I was severely freaked out. I had heard the sharks invade the pirate ship and the terror they inflicted petrified me. They called and shouted, they mocked and laughed. Their confidence made me shake. We had no chance of beating them.
"What was that???"
"My hand - Rachel seriously - calm down!!!"
"I'm sorry - I'm scared!!!"
