(Rachel's POV)

After the car crash my parents took me to see grief councilor named Amy. I liked her. She was always smiling and happy. When I went to see her she didn't cry about things like everyone else in my life did. She just talked to me.

Most of the time we didn't talk about anything serious. We talked about easy things like school and friends. But other times she asked me questions about Will and his accident.

"Do you think it's fair that William had to die?"

"I don't know" i answered.

"Do you sometimes wish that you could talk to him?"

I shook my head, "No"

"Can you tell me how he died?"

I nodded at her, "Yes"

"Okay, tell me, how did William die?"

Suddenly I didn't want to.

"He died in his sleep.... he died in his bed..... and... he had blankets on, so that means that he wasn't cold. And there were no trees around... so that means he didn't hurt"

I remember that Amy didn't believe me but I didn't care. My lie felt good. I liked it better.

When my session finished I sat in the lobby and waited for my parents to talk to Amy. I overheard everything that they were saying.

"I understand that Randy is a major concern to you both right now. But I think Rachel needs even more attention then he does"

"Rachel?" my dad stared.

"Yes. She might not be screaming the loudest or breaking the most furniture, but she's hurting too. She may be hurting worse then him"

"Worse?" my dad asked, "But Rachel wasn't in the car. She didn't see anything that happened - we made sure of it"

"But Randy did. And there is nothing closer then the bond that siblings share. Randy leans on Rachel, but Rachel doesn't lean on anyone. She takes his grief and ignores her own. That's not a healthy coping mechanism. It can have long-term effects. If we don't pay close attention to it now, Rachel will always step out of reality as a way of dealing with life"

"What does that mean?"

"It means that if she hears or sees something that she doesn't like, she'll ignore it. She'll fight everyone else's battles before she fights her own"

"So what should we do?"

"I think it might be a good idea to separate the two of them. Let Rachel be eleven and let Randy be thirteen. An eleven year old can't handle what a thirteen year old can handle"

That night, Randy broke a window and he locked himself in his room.

He wouldn't talk to my parent's. He only asked for me.

So I went and talked to him.

My parents forgot about what the councilor said. They never made me talk to her again.

Randy was in pain, and his pain screamed louder then mine.

(Randy's POV)

In movies, break up scenes always play out the same way. There's a confrontation, a screaming match, and then some sort of a decision is made.

But those scenes aren't real.

Those people aren't real.

They don't have real histories or real feelings for each other. They're just actors.
