"Whoa whoa whoa, Khloe?"Tritannus said, his eyes widening as he caught me before I fell out of the wall/window. "You okay?"
I didn't answer him, my head still spinning. I was too busy focusing on trying to get to my feet and simultaneously trying my best to not give him a sarcastic answer. Does it look like I'm fine you idiot? I thought.
"If you can't speak, blink twice," He said, and I let my hand fly, hitting him on his chest. Unfortunately, it wasn't very hard, and I almost lost my grip on him again.
"Seriously?" I chided him as I tried to blink the dancing spots away from my eyes. "Do I look like I'm on Botox or something?" He said nothing in reply, but just grinned.
My stomach clenched in remembrance of a certain Aquaman who grinned exactly that way. This boss will be the death of me, I thought to myself, And so will that idiot.
Thanks to the unusually ice-cold wind, I felt like I was slowly being frozen to death, and it did not help that I was an inch close to falling to my death a hundred meters below. And the worse thing was, I was clinging to my boss like my life depended on it (well, it actually did, but that's not the point), and I didn't like it one bit.
"Why did you open the wall/window?" I asked him as I tried to pull myself further away from the gaping hole in the wall. That only resulted in us getting closer, darn it. Why does this always happen? I thought to myself. It's like Aphrodite somehow popped down and she's trying to get me hooked up as fast as possible. And neither did I want to get hooked up,nor could I ever let myself get hooked up to somebody.
You can't let yourself fall for anybody. Romantic involvement just causes trouble for your career as a spy. You can't afford to be unfocused. You can't afford to be in love.
I was so caught up in my thoughts, I didn't realize that the wall/window had been closed until the room went completely dark.
"Um, you can let go of me now," Tritannus said, his voice uncomfortably close. With one hand, I felt around for the wall behind me and I slowly leaned against it, letting go of Tritannus as I did so.
"Um,thanks," I muttered, leaning my throbbing head against the wall. I heard a thud next to me, and I knew that Tritannus had also rested against the wall next to me.
"I should thank you," He said, and chuckled drily. "I probably would have been horribly mutilated with burns if you hadn't come."
"Not dead, but horribly mutilated with burns," I said, almost snorting out loud. Then I recalled how Tritannus had said that he was one hundred percent immortal.
The truth just sunk in. He actually said thank you, I thought to myself. He was quiet for a few moments, as if he was thinking (yeah right!), then he said, "How did you get it? Your powers?"
I snapped my fingers, and slowly but surely, the eerie purple flames appeared in my hand. I held it up in front of us, and the purple glow washed over us and the whole room.
"I don't want to talk about it," I said as quietly as possibly. He seemed to understand, because he shifted uncomfortably beside me.
"You can vent, if you want," He said, scratching the back of his neck nervously. He gave me a sympathetic look, which just aggravated me.
"I don't want your pity," I snapped, and then clapped my free hand over my mouth. I should not have talked to him that way. To him, of all people.
"Never said that you did," He said, a smile appearing on his face. For some weird reason, I smelled something burning, and the room seemed brighter. Much brighter.
