"Here we are," I said brightly as Crissy Field came into my view. "Crissy Field. A former U.S army airfield, now a recreational area." I smiled to myself at Tritannus' bored look. "A fact that probably doesn't interest you. Nothing interests you, then again," I said with a smirk on my face.
"I couldn't care less for it," Tritannus muttered as we walked side by side. "All I want to do is get back to the headquarters and continue working on the battle plans."
"Which reminds me," I said, sidling up to him, "You never did explain the reason why we came here."
"I did explain it to you," He said exasperatedly. "We came here for a meeting."
"Yeah, but with Nereus," I pointed out. "Why would he care about Othrys? He's just an annoying wise dude. You seriously need to come to him for counsel?"
Tritannus gave me a glare. "Are you doubting my decision making skills, Khloe?"
"Nope," I said, popping the p. "I'm seriously questioning your basic human characteristics, like having fun, though." I took my hoodie off, letting the sun fall on my bright blue hair. "Sometimes you just need to let your hair down."
"It's already down," He said, the beginnings of a smile forming on his face. "Or rather, it's kind of up. But I think you know what I mean."
I looked at his messy black hair, something that was unusual for a person with such a high position as Tritannus. They usually kept their hair short and neat, but not him. His mane was wild and untameable, like that of an alpha lion. He is like a lion, I thought to myself. Commanding, and he doesn't listen to anyone except for himself.
As the sea neared, I remember another familiar mop of black hair, as rowdy and untameable as the sea at high tide. I smiled a sad smile to myself, remembering the ring in my backpack. If they were still alive, they probably would have been in New Rome, feeding birds at the fountain and holding hands, maybe desperately chasing after a hyperactive kid through the streets.......
Stop it, I chastised myself. Tritannus is here. What's he gonna think of you? He'll think you're crazy, crying all of a sudden.
Why do you care what he thinks of you? Joey asked sneakily, and I mentally slapped myself. You've never been one to give a Hoover Dam about what you say or what people think of you.
We reached the beach, and a smile spread across my face as I saw the waves rolling on the shore, and mortals having fun in the waves and on the sand. I didn't remember the last time I'd ever been to a beach out of my own free will, and I wasn't interested in walking around the beach in Ogygia.
I breathed in the familiar scent of the ocean, though it was missing the cologne. Next to me, Tritannus inhaled sharply.
"Well, the view's great and all," He said then turned on his heel. "Now that you've seen the beach, we can go-"
"Oh no. Nuh huh. Not gonna happen, ever," I said as I managed to grab him by the shirt. "You, sir, need to loosen up. It's like you've permanently got an iron rod jammed up your a- uh,rear end."
I started to pull him towards the sea like I was the moon and he was the water, but my efforts could be described as nothing but futile. He promptly dug his heels into the sand, making a long, deep trench in the ground. The mortals around us gave us weird looks but I didn't care.
"I'm...not..." I huffed, pulling Tritannus along, "Letting...you...be...a..wet...blanket!" We were now nearer to the waves, and Tritannus had made a trench long and deep enough to make a river channel.
At that point, Tritannus probably decided that he had enough. Stopping to an abrupt halt that almost made me fall on the sand, he pulled my hand off his shirt and turned around so he was facing me, his hand cutting off blood circulation to mine. I felt the full force of his stormy glare, and I returned it with equal fire.
