After almost dying, one might be thinking, can things get any worse for me?
Be careful what you wish for, kids. Because, boy was I wrong.
As soon as I fell into a deep enough sleep, the darkness morphed into the throne room in Olympus, where there was only one person. Hecate, goddess of magic and the Mist, and my mom.
"Khloe," She said, shrinking to human size and walking towards me, clasping my hands in hers when she was right in front of me. "It's been so long."
"It has, mom," I said, looking earnestly in her pure black eyes. "And listen, mom, about the letter-"
"I wish we could talk, "My mother said with a tone of urgency, "But there is something you need to know. You're halfway to achieving your goal, two months away, and I couldn't be prouder of you. But before it ends," She paused, then said, "You should know why."
I piped up, but she interrupted and said, "Goodbye, Khloe. And just so you know," The image was shifting, and I knew I was going to be taken somewhere else," I love you. And I'm so sorry, but I had to do it." Suddenly, Hecate disappeared, and I was transported to a different place that I vaguely remembered from my early childhood.
Lagina,I realized. The ancient ruined temple of Hecate in Turkey, where my dad had taken me to once. The place, he said, where he met my mother.
All around the ruins, there were people running around with archaeological stuff that I had absolutely no idea about. In the midst of all that chaos, there was only one person sitting still and looking at a tablet of sorts with inscriptions on it; I gasped when I saw who it was. My dad. Well, a younger version of him.
Helios Alexoupoulos looked as calm yet eager as ever as he read the inscription in Ancient Greek, at which I stared wide-eyed. Dad knew Ancient Greek?? Joey asked me incredulously, and I could only manage a weak mental nod.
I could see why people thought that I looked so much like him. We both had the same dark brown hair (though he didn't have the golden tips that I did, that was a Hecate-inherited condition rather than dyeing), tan and most importantly, the unique violet eyes. Hecate had once said that even if I ended up looking exactly like her, she at least wanted me to have my dad's eyes. Dad liked to joke that his eyes were a turn on factor for all the ladies, but Hecate definitely wasn't arguing with that.
We were so engrossed in reading the inscription, that we didn't see a person stand right behind us. Suddenly a woman said, "Understand Ancient Greek? Finally! I never thought that anyone would find it, let alone be able to understand my pearls of wisdom. Athena's not the only smart goddess around."
Immediately, my dad and I turned around to see a woman with golden hair, pure black eyes and archaeology gear. She smiled at him as if there was some inside joke, and I instantly knew that my father had not been lying. This was where they first met.
Suddenly, my surroundings shifted, and I was now in a fancy-looking hospital. (And by fancy, I mean really fancy; the curtains were made out of woven gold!). The delivery room, I deduced as I saw the same woman from before cradle a newborn baby in her arms. The nurses, Muses and the other goddesses cooed over the kid, and I rolled my eyes. Typical ladies.
"What're you going to name her?" Calliope cooed. Calliope would have suggested her name, no doubt, had Demeter not intervened.
"She should be named in my honor,of course!" Demeter said, a huge grin on her face as she pulled up information about the meaning of the name from the internet. "Let's think........Khloe. Nice name, right?Means blooming, or verdant. Used as a summer nickname for Demeter, AKA,yours truly." She grinned at Hecate and everyone, but the grin meant that she wasn't taking no for an answer.
