As I waited for the flight to San Francisco in the boarding gates, I mentally prepared myself for anything to go horribly wrong. Surprisingly(or not),these things happened a lot to me. I had quite a lot of scrapes in the past, like how I managed to pass the barriers into Camp Half Blood on fire and dragging an unconscious Hydra with me (long story), fleeing Camp Jupiter after hitting Praetor Jason Grace on the head with a nearby shovel(another long story), and the most recent escapade: running for my life from the dungeons of Mount Othrys after they died.........
'"There she isssssssssss!" A dracena hissed to her fellow monsters as they ran after me,in their efforts to capture me and return me to the cell.
Well,I thought, not going to happen. I really want to escape alive, which probably isn't what you're thinking.
I sprinted my way through the corridors of the massive fortress, and the angry mob of monsters behind me grew bigger in size as each minute passed.
In my quest to find an exit,I encountered a dead end. Oh great. I loved dead ends, especially when I was about to get ambushed by a monster mob!
"Portal! Camp Half Blood! Now!"I yelled, hoping that the command would work, since the mob was getting closer, and teleportation was not my strong suit.
As the mob was getting into sight,a portal started to open on the wall behind me. When it was about as small as a beach ball, the mob neared, and they seemed plenty hungry.
I tapped the emerald on my silver bracelet and the harmless-looking piece of jewelry morphed into a wicked sword about two feet long. I was definitely going to need to hold all of these monsters at bay on my own before I could slip through the portal that would take me home.'
As I drifted along in Dreamland, the buzzing of my cellphone brought me back to real life. I looked at the caller ID to see that it was my dad calling.
(You might be thinking,Hey you're a demigod and demigods can't use cell phones, right? But with the proper protection spells,anti-virus and anti-monster apps, you can make it work without it being a giant monster flare.)
My dad,Helios Alexoupoulos, was an archaeologist, and a very famous and busy one at that. He mostly specialised in Ancient Greece, being Greek himself,so he stayed in Athens with my stepmother Evelyn and step-siblings Harry,Maddy and C.C. I was glad that he called,so I could talk to him for the last time before I got on a plane towards my doom.
I answered the call."Hello,Dad?"
"Khloe!"His voice answered from the other side, mostly some dusty old place in Greece. "How's my daughter?"
"Dad,"I said in my best business voice,"I gotta board this plane to my death in a few minutes,so do you mind speeding it up?"
"What?"He asked, and I had to give him the shortest explanation possible.
"So,"I said after explaining,my voice cracking a bit,"This probably might be the last time that I'll talk to you. Even if I do survive this mission,I'll die anyway, you know."
"Oh,Khloe,"He said, and I swear I could hear him starting to tear up. "Don't worry. You're going to return from your mission,I'm sure of it. You've always been a fighter, just like your mom. And when you return,I'm going to give you the biggest hot steaming bowl of 'I told you so'. When the time comes, you can be sure that I'm going to be by your side every step of the way. However short life may be,I couldn't have asked for a better daughter than you. I just wish that you-that we had more time."
"I know,Dad,"I said, tearing up. "But you can't control Fate. Those wrinkly old ladies are super tough to bribe. I've done all I've wanted to do,and I plan to go down fighting."
