I sat on the edge of the bathtub, not really feeling anything. I could smell the delicious scent of food wafting from the kitchen. Rhoan came sauntering in, a beer at his lips and another in his other hand. He held it out for me to take but I just shook my head. He set both of them on the counter and grabbed a pair of tweezers from the top drawer. He straddled the bathtub and grabbed my right hand, he started pulling dirt and rocks out of it and then did the same with my left hand.

"I'm sorry, Gabriel." He said as he then started cleaning the blood off my cheek.

I nodded.

"I don't know what else to say. I never got attached to an animal like that in all of my experience. And I can't say he had a long fulfilling life...he was only over one."

Rhoan was done cleaning out all my cuts, I was bandaged and ready to go. He stood up and leaned against the counter, sipping his beer. I wondered how he couldn't ever become attached like that? Animals are sometimes easier to get along with than humans, and they love you unconditionally.

I stood up and sipped my beer before putting it down and lifting my shirt. I turned to the right and looked in the mirror. On my left side, just above one of my ribs was a bruise. I silently cursed and shook my head. I looked back in the mirror and saw Ryder walking in. He closed the door behind him and sat down on the bathtub.

"Look, I'm sorry about your dog, Gabe. No man should ever have to lose his best friend like that." That was very heartfelt coming from him! I couldn't help but feel touched even though he took out a needle and plunged it into his arm. More drugs. I looked at Rhoan, he rolled his eyes slightly but he had gotten used to Ryder. We all just stood there, choosing our own poison and talking...or not talking. About ten minutes later the door opened and Johanna peeked her head in.

"You guys look like a bunch of teenage girls all sitting around in here!" She laughed lightly.

Ryder laughed too, but I think it was the drugs, and Rhoan and I smiled stiffly.

"Well, come get dinner, then," she held the door open as we all piled out. It must've been funny for her to sit on top of the counter and watch all of us guys around the table eating. Drew and Nikola came teetering in.

"Daddy," Nikola held her arms up to me, wanting me to pick her up. I set her in my lap and buried my face in her black curls. When I looked up, Drew was sitting in Ryder's lap pointing at the food and asking Ryder what he was drinking.

"Oh, its be-"

Rhoan kicked him under the table and shook his head.

"What's your problem, man?" He growls looking at Rhoan.

I laugh and shake my head.

"Its apple juice, Drew," Rhoan says very adultly. He's grown up a lot since when I first met him. I still remember sitting next to him on the plane that night or finding him in the library late that night in his magenta stained jeans and matching tie. His hair was stylishly spiked as if he had just gotten out of bed. For the first time since that night, I noticed his age. Back then, he seemed to be younger than he was, but now he seems older than twenty-six. There were wrinkles by his eyes from smiling and lines on his forehead from frowning. He wore casual jeans and a plain t-shirt. I could have sworn seeing some gray in his hair...
