September

I banged my fist against the door for the millionth time.

"Nikola!" I roared, "Get out of the fucking shower already!"

"Not done yet," she sang.

"I don't care! I still gotta take one! GET OUT!"

"Nope," I was greeted by the sound of the shower running. I growled and stomped over to the linen closet in the hall. I pulled out a towel, grabbed a bar of soap and went downstairs.

"Hi, Johanna," I grumbled as I went out the back door.

"Sweetheart, you always call me 'mom'. I'd settle for 'mother' too." I ignored her and kept walking, slamming the door shut behind me. I unwound the garden hose and dragged it over to the basketball court. I tied a rubber band around the thing that you hold down for the water to come out, and then tossed the nozzle through the rim of the basketball hoop. Then I went back to the house and turned the water on. I left my towel on top of one of Johanna's rose bushes and stripped off my pajamas. I stood under the semi cold water and lathered up the soap. Voila! Instant shower! It got awkward when I saw a couple people walking on the beach watching me. They probably thought I was homeless, whatever. When I finished, I jumped up and knocked the nozzle back through the hoop and wrapped my towel around my waist. I dumped my clothes in the laundry room and then walked through the kitchen.

"Morning, Gabriel," I said, he looked up over the morning paper, giving me an odd look. He was probably wondering why I was coming from outside wet and only wearing a towel, "You might want to put up a fence or something. A few people were looking at me." I laughed as I walked up stairs while Johanna gasped.

"When did he start calling me Gabriel?" I heard him ask Johanna.

Was that all he got out of that conversation? All that he cared about?

I ended up wearing dark jeans and a white v-neck shirt with my letterman's jacket. I went over to the now free bathroom and shaved. Before I went down stairs I stopped and admired myself. I was damn good looking! This year is going to be fucking awesome! I jogged down the stairs and into the kitchen to find everyone sitting at the kitchen table, eating breakfast.

Johanna got up as I sat down and brought me a stack of pancakes. I drowned them in syrup and strawberries and chugged my orange juice. I didn't realize how hungry I was!

Nikola sat across from me in her normal place. She looked pretty and...so unlike herself for the first day of school. She was wearing a white collared shirt with a pale pink button up sweater over it. She had her sleeves rolled up to her elbows and she wore a skirt and flats. But I know this was all just because of Gabriel and Johanna, as soon as we got out of the house she would Ho herself up. God! She was even wearing a silver cross around her neck! I face palmed myself.

"You better go brush your teeth and get going if you want to be on time," Gabriel said.

Nikola stood up and wrapped her arms around his neck, "Bye, daddy! Have a good day at work!"

I waved.

Nikola and I went into the upstairs bathroom and grabbed our tooth brushes. She grabbed her pink one and I grabbed my blue one.

I grabbed my keys off my bedside table and then ran out to the car. Nikola followed shortly behind.

"Let's go. I'm ready to get back to the kingdom." She said happily.
