When I woke up again, I had the same pounding in my head and soreness in my throat. My eyes refused to focus, and I started to choke. Monitors blared in my room as nurses and a doctor came rushing in.
"Get the tube out!" My doctor ordered.
The nurses worked together to remove the tube from my throat as quickly as possible without hurting me. Once it was out, an oxygen mask was placed over my nose and mouth.
"Olivia, take deep breaths," my doctor encouraged, but I was having a hard time following that order. All I could think about was the fact there were three of my doctor and I couldn't figure out which one was real.
"What?!" I gasped, as I pulled the mask away from my mouth, only for it to be forced back in place.
"Breath!"
It took a while for my breathing to even out, but my vision remained unfocused.
"What happened?" I asked weakly.
"Olivia, there were some complications regarding your surgery. You've been in a coma for the past month," my doctor replied.
"I want my husband!" I sobbed.
"Olivia, we will find him. I need you to try to relax," He encouraged as motioned for a nurse to find Elliot.
"Didn't you say that you could fix me? Clearly, you didn't because I was away from my husband and kids for a month!" I spat. His face darkened with a frown as he shoved his hands into the pockets of his white coat.
"We did fix you, but everything was worse than we expected. There was additional damage," He explained.
"Get the fuck out!" I yelled.
"Olivia," My doctor frowned.
"Get out!"
My doctor left the room quickly, his body bumping into Elliot. Elliot shoved him to the side and rushed to my bedside. He cupped my cheeks in his hands before leaning close and pressing his lips against mine.
"El, what happened?" I whimpered as Elliot rested his forehead against my own.
"It doesn't matter right now, Olivia. I'm just so happy you are awake."
---
A lot had changed while I was in a coma. Noah was running around everywhere and Emily was back at school. Ike remained in jail, and there would be a trial once I was better. Elliot was still on leave because he was either spending all his time at the hospital or with our children. The baby I was carrying was still hanging on, no matter how scared I was to be carrying it.
I was released a few weeks after I woke up, and I was still battered from everything that had happened. My wounds still needed time to heal, the ones that everyone could see and those that were on my mind.
"Em, can you grab your brother?" Elliot asked as he helped me through the door. Noah was sprinting around the room and it took a few moments for our daughter to catch him. Once I was seated on the couch, Emily let her brother go and she sank down beside me.
I looked over at Elliot as he sat on the ground and held our son in his arms. Elliot had aged considerably in the last several weeks. His eyes had faded and now there were dark circles under them. I felt so bad that I was the cause of his exhaustion.
"Mommy, can we eat? I'm starving," Emily sighed as she looked up at me.
"Let me grab my phone and I'll order us a pizza," I smiled, before moving to stand. Elliot quickly moved from where he had sat with Noah and forced me back onto the sofa.
"Liv, you need to sit and relax. You just got home and are pregnant, so please sit," Elliot replied. Emily glanced up at me again, her eyes wide.
"What?" Emily questioned.
"Nothing, Em," I replied slowly, as I shot my husband a dirty look.
"Then what does that word mean? Pregnant?"
"Em, just drop it," Elliot warned. Emily stood up and stormed to her bed, and slammed the door. I jumped in my spot and Noah let out a cry.
"Nice job, El," I grumbled, as I pushed myself up slowly.
"Liv, I told you to sit!"
"Elliot, our daughter is upset. You told her I'm pregnant, and she wasn't supposed to know yet!" I spat, before stumbling towards my daughter's room.
When I opened the door, I saw my little girl lying on her bed. She had pulled her blankets over her head and her pillow was resting on top of those. I sank down onto the bed beside her and stroked her back.
"Em, Daddy didn't mean to make you sad," I whispered. She shook her head quickly before tossing her blankets and pillows off her body.
"Daddy meant it! What does pregnant mean?!" Emily exclaimed as tears slipped down her cheeks. I frowned deeply before pulling her tightly into my arms. I held her close before resting my cheek against her hair.
"Em, there is a baby in my belly," I breathed.
"A baby? Like Noah?" Emily asked, and I nodded slowly. I didn't know if I should bring up how the baby might not have Elliot as a father or not.
"It's smaller than Noah, but yes. In a handful of months, you are going to have a baby brother or sister," I replied softly. Emily's eyes brightened as she hugged me tightly and squealed loudly.
I know Emily thinks Elliot is the father of the baby, but I still feel sick to my stomach when I think about Ike having fathered this baby.
