"Emily!" I cried as I ran after my daughter. She ran into the bathroom and locked herself in a stall, and I sighed and ran my hands through my hair.
"Emily, come out. Now." I spoke.
"I don't want to talk to you!" She cried, and I frowned.
"Sweetheart, please. We need to talk about this." I spoke slowly, and she sniffled before opening the stall door slowly.
"Why do we have to talk?" She breathed, and I squatted down in front of her, and I held onto her shoulders, making sure she looked me in the eyes.
"Emily, I'm sorry that you think I'm the cause." I breathed and tears welled in her green eyes.
"I am not thinking it, I know it!" She sobbed, and she started to hit my chest, hitting with all her might before she threw herself into my arms. I held her close, my hand cradling her head like she was a baby.
"Why did it have to be him? He's did NOTHING wrong." She sobbed. I picked her up, still not speaking, and she wrapped her legs around my waist and allowed me to carry her out of the bathroom.
I found a quiet and empty waiting room and I sat, waiting for her tears to stop. When they finally did, she looked at me.
"Sweetie, listen to me, alright?" I spoke quietly and she nodded.
"This world is full of people who do things, bad things, to good people. Now, there are people who are good, but sometimes do things in the heat of the moment. Unfortunately, Daddy is the second. He didn't mean to do harm and cause us to get hurt in the process." I spoke, praying that she understood, and wasn't thinking her father did ONLY bad things.
"So Daddy didn't mean to hurt that man?" She asked, her eyes searching my face.
"Daddy was giving that man what he deserved." I swallowed hard and she nodded before laying her head on my shoulder. She fell asleep before we spoke again, and I dozed off myself, exhausted from the emotional night we had had.
---
Elliot was in the hospital for two weeks. During that time I purchased an apartment, one that was near the precinct. I was not going to stay in that house ever again. So we moved into the apartment, and the kids were sent to school, and Serena to daycare. Rita worked hard to get the charges on Elliot dropped, but failed, and once Elliot was released from the hospital, he was put into Rikers, but he was under guard every second of the day, making sure that he wasn't going to be attacked again.
This was hard on the kids. Noah and Emily were moody, and Serena was even more fussy than she would usually get. I tried everything to get them to be happy, or to at least get their minds off of their father.
"Alright, you guys wanna go to the park?" I asked on a Saturday afternoon, two weeks after Elliot was put into Rikers.
"Daddy isn't gonna be there, so what is the point?" Emily replied coldly.
"Emily, you know that I can't take you guys to see your father." I frowned.
"Yes, you can! Aunt Casey told us you could!" Emily spat, and I frowned and ran my hands through my hair.
"It's too dangerous to have kids up there." I replied, and Emily got up and started to storm off to her room, but I grabbed her arm and pulled her to face me.
"You need to knock this off, right now." I scolded and she slapped me, before running off, and I sighed before shoving my hands into my pockets.
"Emily Margaret!" I screamed, and she just stomped around in her room, slamming things onto the ground, throwing things.
I grabbed my phone and dialed a number I never thought I would to get some help with my children.
---
"Hey Kathy." I sighed as I opened the door. She gave me a gentle smile.
"You look exhausted." She frowned and I nodded.
"Yeah, well dealing with three kids that either verbally tell me that they hate me, and another one who won't calm down unless her father is around really takes the energy out of a woman." I replied and she chuckled.
"Where is Emily?" She asked and I pointed to a door painted a pale pink. She nodded and walked to the door and knocked slowly.
"Emily, it's Kathy. Can I come in?" She asked and Emily opened the door slowly.
Kathy went between Emily and Noah's rooms, talking with them and attempting, and most likely succeeding in getting them to calm down. I swayed with a crying Serena in my arms, failing horribly at getting her to calm down, while I felt like sobbing myself.
After awhile, Kathy came back out and I had put Serena down for a nap, which the only reason she fell asleep is because she cried herself into that position.
"So, how are they doing?" I asked.
"They are doing okay. Both fell asleep." She smiled softly. She sat down next to me.
"Now, how are you doing, Olivia?" Kathy asked and I sighed.
"I don't know if I can do this anymore, Kathy." I breathed, tearfully.
"I know that it is hard, but you are doing better than I was. Elliot was always away, and you helped me and the kids though those times." She replied and I nodded slowly.
"It was the least I could do. Kathy, what if he doesn't get out for years?" I asked and she shrugged.
"Keep doing what you are doing, Liv. Are you taking care of yourself?" She asked, and I shrugged.
"I can barely sleep without thinking about El." I breathed, tearing up.
"How about you go and try to sleep, and I'll stay here and listen for the kids." Kathy smiled, and I shook my head.
"I can't do that to you!" I breathed and she shook her head and reached out and squeezed my hand.
"Olivia, you have did so much for me over the years. Let me do this for you." She replied. I swallowed hard and nodded slowly.
"Thanks, Kathy. Um, Serena should be out for a few hours. Wake me up if she does?" I asked and she nodded.
"Of course."
