"You need to leave this girl," Bob said and I shook my head.
"No, pops, I'm a grown man I think I can tell who's bad for me and who isn't," I said and he sighed, putting down his mug of coffee.
"That girl is no good! She doesn't have a stable job, she doesn't even live around here, and I tell ya she's hiding something. I think it's drugs," he said and I sighed.
"It's not drugs," I said and he raised his eyebrows.
"And how would you know that?" He asked and I glanced down the hall.
"Because we've spent a lot of time together and she's got a life, pops, she's not the person you think she is!"
"A life you say?" He asked and I nodded, "what kind of life? Partying? Drinking? Because you don't need that stuff in your life, Nathan," he said and I sighed again.
"Listen, if you'd just give her a chance I know you'd love her," I said and he shook his head.
"I don't think so Nathan."
"Fine, don't like her," I said and he looked at me. "It doesn't matter all that much because I love her. That's right, I love her," I said and he sighed.
"See what he's gotten himself into now," Bob said to Ruth and she rolled her eyes at him.
"Why do you think it's love?" He asked.
"Because she makes me happy," I said and he scoffed. "No pops, she really does. I'm an angry person, you know that, but whenever I see her or hear her voice it's like all that never happened and she's all that matters. She makes me happy pops, so I'm not giving her up," I said and he nodded.
"And what do you know about her?" He asked and I sighed.
"A lot more then I'm comfortable telling you," I said and Ruth gasped.
"You didn't...?" She asked and I shook my head.
"No, but that's another reason she's so awesome," I said and Bob scoffed again.
"Because she's waiting?" He asked and I shook my head.
"Because at one point while we were on tour I sort of... implied that I wanted to have sex and she stopped it," I said and Bob nodded, sitting back.
"So she's got morals," he said and I sighed again. "And I assume she goes to church?" He asked and I shook my head.
"No, she doesn't believe the same things as we do," I said and he laughed.
"Well that's a disaster waiting to happen," he said.
"Why?"
"What're you gonna do when you have kids? What're you gonna raise them to believe?" He asked and I shook my head.
"It's not like that," I said
"Well then what is it like?"
"We're taking it slow, as it stands now Marriage is so far in the future it's out of the picture," I said and he shook his head.
"I don't like it," he said and Ruth spoke up.
"She's been an awful long time in there," she said and I nodded.
"I'll check on her," I said and she smiled as I got up.
"Kelsey?" I asked, knocking on the door and it opened. "Kels, you ok?" I asked as I walked in and saw her standing in front of the sink, applying lip balm.
"I'm fine," she said, looking at me questioningly. "You ok?" She asked and I sighed, nodding.
"Fine," I said and she nodded, putting the lip balm into her jeans pocket. She slid her hand into mine and we walked down the hall back into the living room.
"It's late, I think we're gonna head back," I said and Bob nodded, standing up.
"Alright, call us," Ruth said as she followed us to the front door. "Have a safe drive home," she said and Kelsey nodded, a faint smile on her face as if she's remembering a happy memory.
"Thanks, and thanks for dinner, it was great," she said and Ruth smiled as I slid Kelsey's jacket up her arms.
"Have a good night Nathan," Ruth said, kissing me on the cheek.
"Thanks Grandma, good night Pops!" I called and he said goodnight from the living room.
"You sure you're ok? You seem kind of freaked out," I said and Kelsey smiled at me as she put on her seatbelt.
"I'm fine, excited to get back though," she said and I nodded, putting the car in drive and pulling away."I don't like her," Bob said and Ruth sighed, sitting down on the couch exactly where Kelsey had been sitting.
"Yes, you said that," she said and he shook his head.
"Child doesn't know what kind of girls are out there, for all he knows she could be using him for money," Bob said and Ruth rolled her eyes.
"She hasn't asked him to buy her a lot of stuff and she has a steady job of her own, I'm pretty sure we can rule that one out," Ruth said and Bob sighed.
"Well then she could be one of those girls who like to brake people's hearts, what're they called? Players? Yea, she could be a player," he said and Ruth shook her head.
"She seems like a nice girl to me," Ruth said and Bob scoffed.
"I just don't want Nathan to get hurt," Bob said and Ruth nodded. "He's been through so much the last thing he needs is to fall for someone and they turn out to be the complete opposite of what he thought they were."
"Nathan's a smart kid," Ruth said and Bob nodded, "he'll he fine."
