Chapter 24: Who's Your Daddy
"You must write about a past companion!" I zoned out just as those words came out from our way too perky home ec substitute. For a married woman, she looked awfully young. And familiar.
Everything was going great for everyone. Mac and Matt became a couple. Mac was cheer captain. Chelsea hadn't shown her face in two months. Graduation was only a couple weeks away. Nalani has had James by her side, hey who knows. Maybe they'll become a real couple. As for me? I was moping around thinking why Kayden left. He wasn't such a bad person. Cocky and arrogant, yes. But not 'bad.'
Someone cleared their throat in front of me and I looked up to see the perky substitute looking..not so perky.
"Yes," I read the board behind her then glanced back in her direction. "Mrs. Collins." That name sounds oddly familiar..
"Would you like to teach the class?" She asked.
"No, I'm sorry it won't happen again." I smiled a polite smile.
"Dawn, you're gonna have to pay attention. Graduation isn't far." James whispered next to me.
"Sorry, but it's not like my grades will change anything now." I replied nonchalantly.
I hadn't sent out any college forums yet, I honestly keep forgetting. With my grades dropping I can kiss my dream of a scholarship goodbye. I'll just save up my own money. Not my parents. I may be a spoiled rich kid. But I'm not a spoiled rich brat.
"Does she look oddly familiar, or is it just me?" I nudged and asked James.
"I think that's Chelsea's sister. Remember how Chelsea was talking about it all last year her being the maid of honor or whatever." James explained.
So that's where I'd heard that name..
"Ohh." I drawled. "I thought she was a lawyer?"
"She quit since it was her parents dream. She's getting her permanent teaching degree this year, for now she's substituting." James explained again.
"Oh-" I cut myself off. "James Richardson since when have you been king of gossip?" I asked playfully cocking a brow.
He just shrugged his shoulders and smiled. Once again another throat was being cleared in front of us.
"Mr. Richardson is it?" Chelsea's sister asked.
"Yes ma'am." James replied.
"Would you like to share your companion since you're so eager to talk?"
"Yes." James replied while I furrowed my brows in total confusion while Chelsea's sister motioned her hands for him to continue.
"Nalani Roy." James smiled towards Nalani next to him.
"Aw, young love." Chelsea's sister chirped and walked away.
James slowly turned to me smiling sheepishly while I glared at both him and Nalani.
"You didn't bother to even tell me!" I whisper yelled not wanting another interrogation from Mrs. Collins.
"Well.." Nalani started sheepishly.
"We were gonna tell you today but-"
"But right now seemed like the perfect time." James finished off for her.
"I wish I could so mad at you guys right now." I said through clenched teeth and let my expression soften. "But I'm too happy for you too." I said smiling widely.
"Now move James. I have talk to my dear friend Nalani.
"Details. Now." I got right to the point.
