My name is Tiffany Rose, and I am the co-author of Hello World. My hacker adventure debut novel should be out by this post! But today, a different story.
I remember sitting in a Starbucks as my friend read the joke off a laffy taffy wrapper. I didn't know the pun related answer so I told her something like my vocab isn't big enough for this.
She sat back and said, "You're a writer."
That's what I'd like to talk about today, not the answer (which was tea pot btw) but not having the words for things. Let's review some vocab. Own Voices: a hashtag made to discuss diverse characters written by authors from that same diverse group. Asexuality: the lack of sexual attraction towards people to a notable and identity based degree.
I first wrote Hello World before I knew what asexuality was. I wrote a character like myself, but I didn't have the word to describe it at the time. It wasn't until after I was given more labels that I realized how much of myself I put into the character.
At the time I also was depressed. I had graduated college, but now I was getting sick all the time which made it hard to do anything with said degree. As Hamilton would sing, "I wrote my way out."
I wrote about someone who was also depressed, but decided to do anything they could to protect someone they cared about. While I never ran around Europe hacking everything, the same drive was poured into the creation of the book itself.
Once I had hoped, I'd be among the first to have a book with an asexual out there, now there's handfuls of them. Publishing is a slow process, and at the novel's release I'm surrounded by a vibrant community, that much like Wattpad itself can be diverse and deep as hell.
If you are trying to figure yourself out, whether that be your gender, or sexuality, or anything that's going on in your head that you simply don't have the word for yet, keep going, keep looking, and learning.
Writing,and living, aren't always the easiest things to do. It will suck sometimes, and it will hurt others. The world is also full of playful things, of people who make you smile, and sometimes dreams come true like having your novel published. I hope you check Hello World out, but at least remember this one thing:
