Hey guys! So for my Wattpad Block Party entry, I've decided to go with a sort of behind the scenes look at the start of the friendship between two of my characters from my Mulan Retelling, a Kind of Bravery, in the form of an alternate take of chapter five of Glass Slippers.

For those of you not familiar with the story, A Kind of Bravery is the sequel to my Cinderella Retelling, Glass Slippers. The story takes place in a fictional world inspired by medieval France, Italy, and Russia. With war, trickery, magic, and nods to the stories of Mulan, The Goose Girl, and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Glass Slippers and the first draft of A Kind of Bravery can be found on my profile at !

Below you will find the first meeting between a nine-almost-ten year old Harriet and Xenon the Dragon. As some of you may see, their meeting is a little different from what it was in the first draft.

So without further ado, I hope you all enjoy!

Chapter Five of Glass Slippers From Harriet's POV

(or the more creative title: How to Free a Barbeclueless Dragon)

The map was broken.

Well, "broken" wasn't the right word. The map had ripped, but Harriet's tired mind couldn't think of the word for what it really was. Mainly because the map had gotten her lost in a forest that wasn't supposed to be real.

Why would a forest with trees with bark made of mirrors and leaves of silver exist? Why would the bandits, magical beasts, and strange folk of other worlds rumored to be in Lupine Forest want to be hidden in a forest that was like a living optical illusion? How would they ever be able to find their way around?

Harriet swallowed a gulp of frustrated tears, holding her green cloak around her tighter and resisting the urge to sit down and just sob. Who cared about getting out? This wasn't fair!

All she'd wanted to do was convince her father not to marry her soon-to-be-stepmother, and that meant going through Lupine Forest to get to him in the city of Salven. She'd known that the Lupine Forest was supposed to be scary and filled with bad people and monsters, but she hadn't counted on just how scary it was.

Every few seconds, booming howls from wolves she couldn't see sounded through the woods, and with every turn of her head, she could see pairs of red eyes trailing her, even if she didn't know where they were. But that was the problem with a forest that had trees with mirrors for bark. You could never tell what direction something really was in.

Standing where she was now, it seemed like the same path went in eight different directions, each with eight versions of herself reflecting back. She wiped her nose, watching as eight girls aged nine (almost ten, mind you!) with pale, tear-streaked faces and tattered green cloaks copied her.
