Grave Secrets – Dead End Paranormal series #1

[Some things based off tales of my ghost hunting group]

Somethings are meant to be kept secret.

Twenty-year-old Willow Fox has been hunting ghosts since she had her own experience at the age of six. She and her father would visit supposedly haunted locations in search of answers, but ultimately found nothing. Now in college as the newest member of the ghost-hunting group, Dead End Paranormal Investigations. They each have their own stories, some too intense to believe and others that spark Willow's interest in the afterlife even more.

When they get an invitation to investigate Waverly Hills Sanitarium, as a dare from a leading paranormal investigator, the team is ecstatic. Though as they spend more time in the building it's clear that they aren't as eager to contact the other side as they thought. Two days in and most of the team has left, leaving Willow with Shane Thomas. Shane, a skeptic to the other side, is eager to experience the others so called claims and refuses to leave even if it means spending the rest of the time alone. His eagerness to encounter the horrific tales of their friends leave Willow wondering if his motive stray beyond searching for answers.

There are dark secrets lurking in the building, ones hidden for decades and meant to stay buried with those they died with. No one has uncovered them before because some people, even the dead, will do anything to keep their secrets.

Chapter excerpt

Kris, Rachel, and I made our way to the fourth floor from command. We slowly made our way up the stairs as the last bit of sunlight disappeared behind the mountains. Our flashlights became the only source of light, and could only illuminate about four feet in front of us. While our eyes would eventually adjust to the darkness, for now this flashlight was my guiding light. The stairs were littered with debris, dust, and the occasional broken piece of furniture. We were followed by Shane's group, who were on their way to the fifth floor, and whoever was venturing to the third floor.

Slowly, we made our way up the small staircase. We split off group one at a time as we made it to our assigned floors. Each of us eager to start and see what Waverly Hills had to offer us. I wanted to see if the building lived up to the stories and the hype. So far it had, but there's more to come. Five days in Waverly Hills, one phrase came to mind "good luck."

Each of our groups were looking for different claims, and would attempt to debunk them before saying it could be something paranormal. While most of us believed in the possibility of the paranormal our goal was to scientifically prove or disprove. That meant no blind beliefs and assumptions, we would investigate until we found an answer and for a building as grandiose as Waverly Hills we would need all five nights in hopes of scratching the surface.

"Be safe guys," Taylor stated as we veered off at out floor.

"You too, remember to call if you need anything and tag your shit so when we look back we are second guessing everything this time," Rachel ordered as we walked onto the floor.

The other groups footsteps quickly disappeared as we walked through the long hallway. I knew Rachel wanted to start where I had seen that shadow, whether she said that or not. It had been clear the moment we stepped on the floor. She took us outside to the enclosed sitting area where they used to roll the beds out so patients could get fresh air.

Of course the terminal patients didn't make it outside to feel the sun or breath in the fresh air that had once been believed to aid in the healing process. Instead they were moved to the opposite side of the building where the windows didn't open. A wave of grief washed over me. To one day be able to breath the fresh air and feel the wind on your skin, and then the next be put in a back room where neither of those could reach you, the thought alone depressed me.
