The Squad's Truth

By: DoNotMicrowave

For my Block Party post, I decided to share a sneak peek of a teen fiction story I've been working on. I'm hoping to start posting once I finish my other teen fiction story, Lies of a Makeup Junkie. Let me know what you think and if I should continue writing it. Hope you enjoy!

The Squad's Truth

Prologue

Mrs. Darby, the principal of Kendrick High, scowled as she surveyed the six students sitting in front of her. "I'm not going to sugarcoat things for you. You're all in a lot of trouble. I managed to hold off the police for now, but that can all change. Do you understand what I'm saying?"

She eyed them, gauging their reactions, but no one so much as flinched. "This isn't the time for you to protect each other. I need you to be honest with me. What happened Thursday night? Who is responsible?"

Mrs. Darby knew these girls were bright. Not only were they in honors classes, but they were leaders of the school. They were captains of sports teams, held positions in student government, and led a lot of extracurricular activities. So how did these smart girls, end up doing such a stupid thing?

Lips pursed, she crossed her arms and leaned against the teacher's desk. "I'll go easy on the first person to talk. This won't go on your permanent record. But if you keep quiet, I will personally make a note in each of your transcripts. Now who's willing to talk?"

Her question was met with heavy silence.

"Fine. Then I guess we're going to be spending a lot of time together till someone confesses. Welcome to Saturday detention, girls."

Mrs. Darby walked out but stopped on the other side of the doorway. Out of sight, but not out of hearing. It took only a couple moments before someone started talking.

"Maybe we should—"

"Be quiet, Lux. No one is saying anything." The authority behind the order could only belong to the leader of the group, Sydney Warren.

Lux whispered, "I can't have this on my record. Yale will never accept me."

Another voice spoke up. "Just get your mom to fork over some money. I'm sure they'll overlook it with a new law wing built in your family's name."

"You don't know crap, Maxy-Pad," Lux shot back.

"STOP calling me that."

Sydney hissed, "Don't tell Lux what to do."

"Why not? You do it all the time," Max pointed out.

"Oh shut up. We wouldn't be here if you hadn't gotten involved," Sydney told Max.

"So this is all my fault? How typical. You never take responsibility for anything. Always blame someone else."

Sydney barked out a laugh. "And you always deflect. I know why you moved back here."

"What do you mean?" Lux asked. "She came back to live with her mom."

"Don't be so naïve," said Sydney. "She came back to get revenge on us. Isn't that right, Max? You've been planning this since the very beginning."

Silence filled the room.

"Tell me! I deserve the truth," Sydney yelled.

A long pause. Then, "You deserve everything you got. But if you want to talk about the truth, Sydney, then let's talk. I have a few questions for you."
