Soon enough, New Year's Eve rolled around and my parents were hosting a big party. I had made sure to invite Mitch and even though he was grounded he had promised to come. Still, part of me couldn't help but be anxious that he wouldn't be able to make it.
I took out all the champagnes I had bought for today and put them on the big wooden table in the living room before I checked myself in the mirror for the twentieth time to make sure I looked snatched.
I had put on the fanciest clothing that I had, hoping I wouldn't be too overdressed in comparison to Mitch because let's face it, that would've been the worst. Mitch was a Fashion Queen, so it would never be possible, but I just had to make sure.
By the time six rolled around, I had rechecked myself twice more and adjusted my hair. Everything was planned and everything was going to be alright. I took a deep breath, composing myself from all the nervousness. It was going to be alright.
The doorbell rang and I sprinted into the hallway to open the door. My heart jumped when I looked into those chocolate brown eyes framed by thick black lashes that could only belong to one person.
"Hey, Mitchy," I said and smiled, inviting him in. "I'm glad everything worked out and you could come."
"Me too," he said, smiling at me. He looked cute today. His hair was styled a bit differently and he was wearing glasses. I was pretty positive he didn't need them, but they looked really good on him. His shirt was - what else to expect - from some expensive brand, the material looked super expensive and super soft. It was only when Mitch blushed that I realized I was staring at him. I looked away, flustered.
"Sorry, didn't mean to stare. You just look stunning today."
"Thank you," Mitch said. "You too look pretty handsome." He put a hand on my chest and I noticed his nails were painted a soft beige. Really suit him well.
"Come on," I said and took his hand, leading him to the living room. "Where do you wanna sit?"
"Is no one there, yet?" Mitch wanted to know and I shook my head.
"No, they're coming at half past six. I wanted to spend some time with you alone before my family comes-"
"Oh, hi, Mitch!" My mom chirped when she came from the kitchen to put the first plates of food onto the table. She hugged him, wishing him a happy new year. My mom was like that, she hugged and littered kisses over everyone she saw. Kind of cute when you thought about it, but not when she was doing it to my bo- best friend.
Mitch just smiled shyly. "Hi, Connie. Happy new year to you, too."
"Thank you!" She said and then looked at him, smiling. "I'll have to finish making the food, you two have fun!" She turned back and headed into the kitchen. I looked at Mitch, probably still blushing.
"Your mom's so nice," Mitch commented. "As always."
I shrugged. "She can be tough sometimes. But yeah, she's great."
Mitch waited until Connie was back in the kitchen to speak. "She looked at me suspiciously," he mentioned in a low voice. "What is she thinking?"
"Oh she totally thinks we're dating," I said smiling, brushing that one strand back from his eyes. "I didn't tell her anything but ever since she found out I was pan she wants me to be in a relationship with pretty much everyone I bring home." I let out a small chuckle, but the nervosity didn't fade. There was some kind of tension between us that just wouldn't go away ever since we first kissed on Christmas. Sparks seemed to be flying wildly (that's what my mom said- not me) between us, and to be honest I could feel those exact sparks in my stomach.
