We the Poets

People think

we poets waste our time

planning out words

trying to make them rhyme

weighing the worth

of each tiny letter -

we poets know a little better.

People think

that we poets are all

just depressed drunks

hippie hipsters

or self-satisfied monks

and in the end

we're all vagrants and bums -

we poets know that's only some.

People think

we poets are angered by humanity

furiously writing

strings of insanity

we're all mad here

in a number of ways

just blowing off steam

when we have nothing to say

and we declare our ramblings

to be God's gift -

we poets know our rights -

we plead the fifth.

People think

we poets know nothing

we poets are fools

that we are brainless

as a rule

and since our heads are so light

they float

or fly like kites

and that's how we come

to land in the clouds

of which

we are so proud

they think it's senseless

to hope

and pray

and dream like we do -

we poets know it to be true!
