To the Poet

You do not need to be tortured to be an artist
Your worth is not based on how many cards you can play
You are not the sum of all that has been done to you
You are so much more

You are not beautiful because of your scars
Or in spite of your scars
You are not your scars
You are beautiful
You have scars

You do not owe anyone a resume of your pain
The gate to great art does not have a traumatic experience entrance fee
No one is more valid
For having been more broken

Beautiful poet
I need you to know
That I love your stories
No matter how angry you get
And I love you
No matter what you expect
I know someone told you that you needed to have something to say
Before anyone would listen
But I want to tell you that
You can scream and cry
That's okay
I'll hold you
But we can sit here
And listen to the world turn
If you want to
