The digits on her phone screen changed. 12:00. Her breath was caught in her throat. It was officially another year piled on to the day her parents had passed away. She hears the silent drops of the broken tap as it echoes in her small apartment. The silver shade of moonlight stealthily roams her room like a burglar. What had she done to the Gods and Heaven to deserve this unfortunate fate?
She bites her lips, struggling to keep in the tears. It's okay, she tells herself. What's another year alone? The sound of her door opening brought her out of bed. She called out to the empty darkness, waiting for an answer. Who would be her saviour from this silent night?
"Let's go!" yelled Hoseok as he came running in her room. He was followed by Jungkook, jumping up and down and grinning from ear to ear. Her heart thumped at the sight of the boys. It was filled with a mixture of sadness, joy and relief.
She had met them at a group therapy session just a year after her parents' death. She had been struggling to live her days without having recurring nightmares of the car crash. A friend from work had suggested she went for the therapy sessions, claiming it had helped her with her depression. The idea of sitting around strangers, sharing stories of their personal lives appalled her at first. But she got worse day by day.
And so she dragged herself to the group sessions. It was dull at first. Painful, even, to open up about her heart. She had worked so hard to lock it up, to open it, took a few tries. As she continued to attend the sessions, she made friends with Hoseok and Jungkook. After hearing their stories, it occurred to her that she wasn't the only one that was damaged. Being around people who experienced similar sorrow did help her.
The three of them were now bundled in Hoseok's pickup truck, bounding down a hidden trail. She was pulled out of her bed by the two, claiming that it was a must that she followed. They wouldn't say where they were headed so she kept quiet and anticipated the surprise. After hours of driving, they finally arrived.
"We're here to camp!" Jungkook said excitedly as he held his hands out to the view. They were parked by a clear patch of land on a cliff that overlooked the crashing waves of the ocean. The stars that spotted the black sky shined bright for them, creating their own mystical galaxy.
It was beautiful.
She couldn't help but laugh out loud. A tear escaped the corner of her eyes. They knew how much camping meant to her. Her parents had always brought her out into the wild to camp during the holidays. It was a tradition, broken since their death. Now, thanks to Hoseok and Jungkook, it was revitalised.
Finally, they were all settled by the fire, buried in thick blankets, laughing over the way they were while setting up the tents. Her heart soared around the boys. She was thankful to them for getting her up there.
At least for today, she was not alone.
