Little Green Hearts

Jack sighed as yet another green heart circled around his head. He swatted at it, pushing it away from him, but another one only took its place as he continued to scroll through his Instagram feed. In the world he lived in, when you had a crush on someone, little hearts would appear every time you saw them until you confessed your love. That lead to Jack's current situation, bins and buckets full of little green hearts that had popped up for the past couple months, a constant reminder of the lover he could never have.

He sighed, pausing to stare at one of Mark's picture a little bit longer than the others, five hearts simultaneously popping into existence. Jack shot a glance up to the hearts that hovered in the air, but he rolled his eyes and just left them there. He could deal with those later. After another couple minutes, Jack stood to his feet and ran a hand through his green hair, the shade similar to the hearts that floated around him. His ocean eyes scanned the room and counted a total of 15 that had appeared from his 5 minutes break.

A small smile appeared on his face as his mind wandered off into a daydream fantasy, the Irishman walking around the room and softly plucking them out of the air. He gently shoved them in his newest hiding spot, the drawer in his nightstand, before yawning and crawling in bed. Sometimes if he was feeling lonely, he'd open the drawer and let all the green hearts stream out, filling the open air. Other times, like tonight, he'd just add his days worth into it and go to sleep.

The next morning came all too soon, Jack not wanting to wake up and have to function on the Saturday morning. So, he didn't. Instead he opened to drawer on his night stand and let all the hearts stream out, dancing in the air. He couldn't help it to smile as the drifted in the air, following him around as he finally got out of bed. He shuffled downstairs to the kitchen in his pajamas, yawning as he poured himself a bowl of cereal. The little green hearts followed his every move, faithful as ever.

Sometimes he hated them, sometimes he adored them, and sometimes he forgot they were there, but today he didn't seem to mind them at all. Of course, as he went throughout his day, more hearts joined the bunch in the air. He was doing a collab with Mark today and two of his friends, so he was certainly thankful that all the hearts floated just out of view. As time went on, more and more hearts appeared, Jack slowly running out of places to hide them. What made it even worse was the fact that Mark was coming to visit.

Jack scrambled around the house as the doorbell rang, checking one last time that there were no hearts to be seen. He opened the door with a smile, welcoming the raven haired man into his home. They hugged briefly, a green heart popping up behind Mark's back. Jack quickly snatched it and shoved it into his pocket, before leading the way to where Mark was gonna stay. Jack descended the stairs once more, growling slightly as yet another heart popped up. He shoved that one in his pocket as well.

Jack spent the whole next day snatching hearts and quickly shoving them out of sight, trying to seem as inconspicuous as possible. It wasn't until Mark's third day of visit that it happened. As the two were talking, sitting on the couch and messing around after the movie they were watching just ended, Jack saw another heart appear out of the corner of his eye. Desperate for Mark not to see, he grabbed it from the air, going to toss it behind the couch, only to freeze in the process. The heart was red, not green.

His gaze flickered up to Mark, whose face seemed to be the same color of the heart Jack held in his hands, the chocolate eyed male beginning to sputter out excuses. But Jack wouldn't have it. He let go of the red heart, practically jumping on Mark and slamming their lips together. They both pulled away satisfied, all of Jack's little green hearts exploding from their hiding places and filling the room. Mark smiled, the red hearts he had gathered from the few days of being here joining the onslaught of green that filled the air.

I guess those little hearts weren't so bad after all.
