uneditted-sorry

"Wait so you're telling me that there were fingerprints on the knife that match...Ryan's?" I stutter. I was speaking to my lawyer, the court case for Vi was in a few days time. I didn't want to attend it, I couldn't bare to see his face. But I needed to know what was happening.

"Yes. They tested it for fingerprints and found one set which directly matches Ryan's." She seems sympathetic but it was the truth. And it just confirmed the fact that it was Ryan. I nod in response. "Now. Umm, Vi was being kept as part of the case. But since court is on Friday, it'll be over by Sunday." She nods. I had planned the funeral after I had heard her will. Since I had no other living family she had left everything to me, the house and all. She didn't leave any funeral wishes but I knew what she'd want.

"So all the details are set for that date. Yes." She nods as if to reassure herself. "Right then, so I understand you aren't coming to the court date, which isn't necessary. But would you like me to give you a call for the results afterwards...?" I think she sensed I was sensitive on the whole court case thing.

"Um no. His mother's attending, she'll tell me after."

"Okay. And also, I was told to inform you that you can move back in your house on Saturday. Everything will be finished by then."

My eyes were beginning to water slightly I coughed, "Oh okay. Thank you. Is that it?" I wanted to leave as soon as possible.

"Yes. Thank you Miss.Murray." She says standing up and opening the door to her office. I walk out of the building. I half-run to the car. Laila had driven me. It was probably the first time I'd left the house since I went to the police station. That was just under two weeks ago.

After Brandon had got me to talk I had slowly started eating again, sleeping was still an issue; I was only going off five hours sleep today but it was getting better.

"Cas. Did you hear me?" Laila says putting the car into the reverse.

"Hmmm?"

"How was it?" Laila asks.

"It was fine." I say, I was still mulling over the fact that fingerprints had been found on the...the weapon. "Just..." I sigh. "The police found fingerprints....on the knife." Laila's mouth formed an oh shape as she continued to focus on the road. "They matched Ryan's." She seemed to not looked surprised and frowned her eyebrows as she took a left turn from the roundabout.  "You aren't surprised."

"No. I am. I'm just thinking."

"Oh thinking my ass. You knew already didn't you. You knew about the fingerprints being Ryan's? Laila seems to opening and closing her mouth, she was lost for words." I'm guessing that's a yes." I roll my eyes. "Who told you?!"

"Madeline." Laila says in a small voice. Of course. Even though I was living in Madeline's house I felt awkward around her. Which was weird, she was always kind to me. But I felt like with Ryan and his direct link to Vi's death she felt bad. And I felt awkward, I mean her son was going to court on Friday, he was possible facing jail for the murder of my aunt. And here I am living under the same roof as her.  I jump out of my thoughts.

"You didn't think to tell me though?! I just found out and struggled to restrain from having a meltdown when she told me."

"You were doing so well this week and we got a smile out of you and I don't know. We didn't want to put another frown on your face.I'm sorry." I sighed again. I knew they were all trying to do what was best but urghh goddammit, they could have just told me.

"No. Don't worry about it. I understand. Just please be honest with me and don't keep things from me."

"Okay. We good...?" Laila asks cautiously.

"Of course we're good. I'm sorry. My emotions are a little crazy at the moment. I must have seemed quite angry."

"Yeahh. Drake said the other day it is like you're pregnant hormonal women and then Emily hit him. " Laila laughs. I can imagine Drake saying something like that and it brings a small smile to my face.

We arrive back at my temporary home and she waves bye as she drives off. I stop in the front doorway, I needed to fix things with Madeline. It wasn't like we'd argued. I just needed to make sure she understood I was thankful for her letting me stay here and all. I hear her in the kitchen humming to the radio. "Sign of the Times." I loved that song.

"Madeline." I say, she drops the whisk into the bowl as she looks up.

"Cas. Did you want something?"

"No. Well yes. I just want you to know I'm thankful for you letting me stay here. I know I've probably been the hardest house guest in the past two weeks, but you've been so kind to me through all of ....this." I gesture with my hands waving them around unsure how to say how awkward this situation is with her being Ryan's mother.

"Aww. Cas dear, It's fine. You're like a daughter to me anyway. You're always welcome here. "

"I'm just sorry about all this court drama." I apologise, knowing how this had affected her work schedules and Nancy a lot.

"Oh hon. It isn't your fault. I should be the one saying sorry, I mean he is my son." She says her eyes getting teary.

"It's fine. You've done nothing but be helpful." I step forward and wrap my arms around her as  she gives me a firm hug. It reminded me of Ryan's hugs.

"Okay. Now, I wasn't sure what you wanted for dinner. I'm just doing some baking."

"Oh. It's fine. I can help make something. How about home-made pizza." I say thinking of Vi and smiling at the fond memories of pizza making.

"Perfect. Go get Nancy, she loves putting on toppings."
