We flew back to Miami the next day and made our way back onto campus. We still had about four days left of break but I guess it was better to get a head start on everything.
I lay in my dorm room which was disturbingly quiet without Liv's music blaring throughout the room. I scrolled through my instagram and stared at the picture I had previously uploaded from California of Drew and I smiling at each other underwater.
I set the phone down on my bedside table and closed my eyes, slipping into nothingness.
**
When I awoke, it was dark so I figured it was too early to be awake. I turned over and grabbed my phone off the desk and pulled it in front of my face. My eyes squinted at the bright light shining from the screen as I scrolled though the notifications from my picture until one caught my attention.
I quickly sat up in bed and pulled the phone closer to my face. One of the notifications read:
"alexconstancio liked your picture"
I sat still, unable to think of what to do next. Rather than freak out or panic, I placed the phone back onto the dresser and fell back into the comfort and warmth of my blankets. Maybe if I lay in them long enough, they'll get rid of all of my problems.
**
I woke around 2pm and threw on a pair of white pants and a sweater, considering it was still kind of cold here in Miami.
I pushed open the door to my dorm. I made my way though the building and towards the Starbucks near it. I walked into silence as the ship was almost completely empty beside the guy behind the counter. I casually walked up, smiling at him as he smiled at me.
"Hi," I began, "can I, um, have a tall caramel Frappichino please?"
"Yes, of course," he smiled, punching something into the register and then writing something down on a cup before placing it beside him. I handed him a five, without hearing what the exact total was and was handed back about $1.50.
I walked to the end of the bar and heard the door open. It was Colby. She stood wearing a pair of old, faded jeans and a hoodie and smiled at me as she approached.
"Hey!" She smiled before embracing me in a hug.
"Hi!" I laughed back, "what are you doing here?"
"Just being a common white girl and getting a Starbucks," she joked, flipping her hair as she spoke.
I laughed as she did and waited for my coffee as she ordered hers.
"So when did you and Drew get back?" She asked, still smiling.
"We got back yesterday and we're both kind of jet lagged," I spoke, almost in a laugh.
"Yeah. That's what Cali time will do to you," she began. "So I was thinking! We should hang out sometime or something!"
"Yeah! Absolutely!" I grinned as the worker slid my drink across the small table and into my hand.
"Tall caramel frappichino! Have a good day!" He spoke, winking at me.
"You too," I laughed as Colby gave me a looking, fighting back laughter.
"I'll see you later," I laughed at Colby before exiting the shop and heading towards the bookstore.
It felt good to be getting back to normal or at least my new normal. Once I got there, I chose a table next to a window and sat down. It was starting to pour down and it was kind of calming. The not so calming thing though was that I didn't have a jacket. Or an umbrella so I was going to get soaked if I dared to leave anytime soon.
My phone rang from my pocket and I reached for it. Guess it was a good thing that I spent over $90 on a lifeproof case right?
"Hello?" I answered, softly.
"Hey! Where you at?" Drew asked, sounding somewhat frantic.
"I'm at the bookstore. Why?" I asked, beginning to panic.
"I'm on my way,"
"Okay?" I somewhat asked as he hung up the phone.
I placed it back down on the table and continued looking through the seventeen magazine that lay in front of me when the workers began to shut the doors just as Drew slid through and ran towards me, drenched from the rain.
