Brooding

I sighed in relief when I jumped inside the plush black car. I squished myself between Cal and Harry, Tobi and JJ sitting in the row before us. Simon slammed the door loudly behind him, and sat next to Tobi.

The boys almost immediately started chatting about what I had just done, for some reason, congratulating me. Why were they recognizing my actions as if I had just completed a half marathon? Punching someone (even if it was Jackson), was not something to be celebrated.

"I thought I saw him running off with a bleeding nose!"

"The look on his face was gold."

"Ha didn't realize you had such a good swing on yah their Luce." I wasn't really listening. Simon was staring angrily out of the blackened car window, one foot resting on his other knee. His face was cupped in his hand as he glared, irritated and silent.

"What's up?" Tobi asked, catching on to Simon's angry sulking. He gently poked Simon in the ribs, trying to get an answer.

Simon said nothing, just shoved Tobi away angrily.

"You could've told us ye were on ya period, mate." Harry joked, causing the other boys to guffaw in laughter. Simon scowled, and didn't say another word till we hit the apartment. I tried to not think of how Jackson had treated me. The past 15 minutes had brought feelings of desperate confusion and anxiety. I tried to push them down, bury them till I was in a better state to comprehend everything. I was appalled that I was in such a situation, and even more bewildered by Jacksons words, his cold threat.

You got out though. I reminded my self. Nothing serious happened. I tried to stop worrying, concentrating on the boys sitting around me.

Josh drove us into the driveway, and we got out, Simon remaining seated in the car.

" You coming?" I asked, gently touching his shoulder.

Simon shrugged my hand away, and pushed past me out of the car. I shut the door behind him, wondering what had gotten into him. He originally didn't seem to want to go to the party, but I didn't understand why he was this upset. If it was about the Jackson incident, nothing had happened to me – so surely he had nothing to be acting up about?

He walked in front of the rest of the group, speeding away from us in a dark silence

"What's gotten into him?" Josh asked, dropping back to walk beside me. I shrugged, wanting to know the answer to that question myself. We approached the front door, and I caught a glimpse of Simon's angry face as he slammed the door without waiting for us.

"Come on, Simon." Harry moaned, opening the door again for the rest of us. As we stepped over the threshold, I could help but notice the boys shooting glances between each other, then at me.

What was going on? Tobi and Harry began to whisper as they kicked off their shoes, occasionally glancing at me. I folded my arms, glaring at the pair. I was drunk, but not drunk enough to understand the language of muted communication.

Tobi looked over at me, as Harry murmured something, nodding in response.

"Okay, that's it." I said, stepping before the group of boys. I put my hands on my hips, irritation scratching in my veins.

"What is going on here?" I demanded, staring at Harry and Tobi. They looked at each other, and Tobi shrugged, averting his eyes.

"JJ?" I asked, turning to the tall boy. He looked away, stuffing his hands deep into his pockets.

"Seriously guys?" I asked; feeling exasperated.

"They were talking about Simon." Harry admitted up, glancing around the room. He shrunk back behind JJ when Tobi shot him a deathly stare.

"What's wrong with him?" I asked, looing between the boys.

"Please, tell me what is going on." I said. I was a part of their massive family now, and I needed to know what was going on. This group of British boys had become very close friends to me over the past couple of months. I felt like I had known them much longer than I actually had. I felt more at peace with them than with my family at home, and I would hate to think that any of them had something major wrong with them. Simon had been acting strangely lately, and if the other guys had noticed it, I couldn't possibly be insane.

" Seriously guys," I repeated, my voice softening.

"Sorry, Luce now's not the time." Josh said, patting me on the shoulder sadly. I stood there as the boys walked past me, feeling confused and left out of the group.

"Come on, Lu Luuuuuu." Tobi said, grabbing my arm. I smiled slightly at his nickname for me, and allowed him to drag me out of the foyer,

" We have to fix your hand now." He said cheerfully, pulling me past my shared room towards the lounge. Of course Simon had shut the door. He must be in one of those moods, but for what reason? The mystery of the century.

"You fully know I am very capable of doing that myself." I told Tobi, pushing Simon out of my mind.

"Meh." He shrugged. "I wanna talk about it, I guess. I never knew you had a tough streak in you."

"Neither did I." I admitted.

Josh opened the door to the living room, revealing a scene of utter chaos. It looked like a bomb had gone off, clothes, bags, food wrappers and blankets were scattered around the living room. What on Earth had the others been up to?

"Sorry bout the mess." Vik said, startling most of us as he appeared from beneath a blanket on the couch.

"This is worse that my brothers room." I joked, before freezing. What he had done had slipped from my mind, and the painful memory was like a slap to the face.

"Wait till you see Harry's!" Cal shouted. "Follow me!" Thank god I had enthusiastic friends to distract me.

"No!" Harry screamed as I scampered after Cal, following him up the stairs to Harry's hallway. Cal was laughing loudly, and I started giggling when I saw the look on Harry's face.

"Feast ye eyes on this!" Cal shouted triumphantly, whipping open the door or Harrys room.

I looked in, and was met by an even worse mess than down stairs. I put my hands over my nose.

"Haz, what died in there?" I asked as he reached us.

"Nothing, I've been sleeping in the lounge." He said, pulling the door shut.

"I wondered why." I laughed. How had he managed to make his room like that after only a couple of days?

"We should get that cleaned up now." Josh said, pointing at my hands, covered with dry brown blood.

"I think that's a good idea." I said, and I slowly began to walk down the stairs, inspecting the back of my hands. They wouldn't need stitches, perhaps just some steri tape to pull the skin back together while they healed.

"I know where the first aid kit is, I'll go get it for you." Cal said. He began rambling on about the stuff that might be in it, but suddenly fell silent. We had reached the bottom of the stairs, and I looked back up to Cal, who was a few steps above me. Why had he stopped talking?

I turned back to the front to find a brooding Simon holding a small red bag with a white cross on the front.

"Come on." He grumbled.

I glanced back to Cal, taking a deep breath. Here we go then.
