OK, let's rate it first, so I can then review it, because I just saw the last episode before writing this and it definitely put a strong influence on the rating: 3.95/5.
Yeah, that's low, but it was supposed to be lower. Let me go in-depth.
Initially, the first few episodes were cringey. In fact, this entire show was just straight up rushed. Lockjaw's CGI looked bad- and let this be known, I am saying that MARVEL/DISNEY did this, and we all know that they do not joke around as far as graphics go!
So, I don't know what happened here. They've designed the most complex things in the on-screen Marvel universe, but they couldn't make a massive dog look good? Really?
And Lockjaw was one of the quirks of the show I was really excited for, because I love Lockjaw's character. An Inhuman dog that teleports? That's awesome!
Wait, wouldn't that be Incanine??...
@ofthe, help me on that bit. xDAnywho, yes, one could argue a TV show's budget is not as big as a movie's- BUT, "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." is a TV show, right? And, from what I remember, tons of people loved how Ghost Rider looked in this last season?
Right? Because, I know I was amazed! As scary as a character as Ghost Rider's supposed to be, I'm gonna go ahead and say he was beautiful compared to the disrespecting blob they made out of Lockjaw!
Granted, I think in the last few episodes they patched him up a bit, but still, no excuse Marvel. 😕
Moving on, a lot of things followed the same pattern, it had a rocky beginning, then it cleaned up a bit in the end when it was good and over.
What a shame really, because when Marvel released their very first timeline for their future movies, Inhumans was supposed to be a movie! And you know what, looking at what they did here, they shoulda kept it as so. Could have saved it for after the Avengers saga- OR, include them into "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." and make a whole season interacting with them. Either one would have been better.
At first, the choreography was a bit awkward, it looked as if the actors hadn't practiced certain moves enough. Later, it got much better. Met the standards of Marvel, nice.
Dialogue, things were a bit flat, until the antagonist, Maximus stepped in. In fact, I loved Maximus in Inhumans. Whenever he spoke, it made me respect him more as a villain, whether through monologue, dialogue, or soliloquy. He brought out the emotion in every character, carving the characters better for the audience to appeal to more.
Once more, in the beginning I had no idea what this show was even supposed to be about. But as the show progressed, a little Marvel magic was sprinkled in, but not enough to give it that flavor we all love.
If the show had not improved in anyway throughout, I would've left it as a 3/5 (at max). No lie, that's what it was going to be. Which sucks, because it's not the actors, they all did really well on their part, it was the work all around them. Graphics, direction, script, and so on.
Luckily, they picked it up. But there is one thing I appreciated about "Inhumans" and it's what really bumped its score: the emotion.
Many fans know that outside of them meeting other heroes on Earth, the Inhumans in the comics have some interesting family drama back in their own home. Too much to get into here, but in short, there were a lot of emotional moments that held lessons. Ones of family, life, and even some thought-provoking predicaments involving politics.
And that's something Marvel was able to maintain in this adaptation: lessons (something all of their works have), original identity of characters, and more importantly, relatable emotions.
Yeah, you can't relate with these weird characters in many ways, but the struggles they face in this show, are still very human, and the biggest one is fitting in with society.
In the end, you just gotta accept who you are and walk chin-high.
A lot more could have been done with this branch of Marvel, and eight episodes was obviously not enough. I'm not entirely disappointed with Marvel anymore, because they ended with a thought-provoking note (one that reconnects to the larger universe, and whether or not it has do with the next Avengers movies or after so, is still unknown), but I am upset that this was something Marvel let slip, especially since they had it in mind before they've had many of their other projects!
Ah, well. Things change obviously, and unfortunately, those changes didn't help this show. I do hope we can revisit these characters again, whether through a better (and longer) season, or through other means (crossover?), because there certainly is potential here!
That's all folks.
