I wanna consider this sort of an update to my last NMT about the Disney/Fox deal.
So, Disney now really wants to make it happen that R-rated Marvel movies have a different branding approach. In simpler terms, they want to make sure those movies are specifically labeled so before you go watch them!
And because of this, this is the perfect time to revive a very crucial era of Marvel; an era in which Marvel used to brand their own comics in a similar fashion, known as Marvel Knights.
Roughly around early-2000s before Marvel was the spectacular company it is today, they were in really bad debt before Disney saved them. This lead to them finding help elsewhere (hence, why Fox and Sony even owned some of their properties for so long).
Not just movies though, their comics themselves weren't raking in the mecessary chump change either. So they wanted a new approach, but didn't know how.
I'm too lazy to search the name right now, but they brought in a guy to basically help "re-write Marvel." This guy decided to take several Marvel characters- such as Spider-Man, Daredevil, The Inhumans, and even Deadpool- and recreate their stories through darker means. A no holds barred, gore if necessary, and "kids, this is the real world unfortunately" approach.
From what I understand, such raw and yet powerful material was appealing and actually helped Marvel get back on their feet. After a while, the guy in charge of these publications known as Marvel Knights was promoted BIG TIME. I don't remember what his exact title is, but think "CEO" or "COO."
Marvel realized this was the route to go, that stories were calling for something a bit more relatable, and as we see today, Marvel has worked that into their formula. Eventually, the Marvel Knights helm was no longer necessary as it had led to bigger things that we now see today.
Today, we see Marvel once again in a struggle to provide the raw, true, and gritty stories that these characters (especially the ones they reclaimed) actually do have, but need to be slightly adjusted to satisfy the inclusion of the general Disney audience.
Granted, Marvel has done extremely well at doing so on their own. But now that you have Deadpool again, and X-Men, too, I'm sorry Marvel, it'll be hard to work this without ruining it. You made Deadpool into the flamboyant and provocative character he is, and too people love it.
For the 10+ years Wolverine has been in a movie, you allowed his last one to be true to the character through the Rated-R approach, and hey- the record shows that it was the best of them all! To think, they're considering Oscar nominations for "Logan."
You. Can't. Ignore that.
So Disney? You want to make a new brand? You still want to appeal to us fans who know some of your characters and those who want/need to know?
Here's a popular suggestion for your new brand name: how about "Marvel Knights?"
I have a cool idea, you should like roll your usual animation at the beginning of the movie/trailer, and then when the "Marvel Studios" banner pops up, have the background turn black and have "Studios" flip into "Knights."
Yeah boi. 😏
This sounds better than my "maRvel daRk" idea, honestly! 🤣
*Die-hard fans, what do you think? Should we revive this brand? I say it's appropriate! And fans who don't know the comic book material, how does this sound? Are you ready to know the true struggles and secrets of your favorite heroes? Comment your thoughts if you'd like, share with others of interest, follow for more, and don't forget to vote! Thankees!
