NMT: Bumblebee Review

Well, to say the least, this movie was interesting...

It was very different than most Transformers movies, in fact, I can understand why director Travis Knight said this isn't exactly a "reboot." It feels more like a "retcon movie," or in other words, the movie's still a part of the main series, but any of the facts from the previous movies that conflict with what's stated in this movie, are to be completely ignored and the new ones are to be taken as the new main facts.

So, if you haven't watched the other movies, this isn't a bad place to start, because they want to start a new era from this movie forward. If you have, be prepared to do some thinking and a bit of readjusting.

Now, the movie focuses on the more emotional side of the characters, especially Bumblebee. He gets his memory corrupted and forgets that he is in fact a robotic soldier. For the rest of the movie, he's a bit wimpy, cute even, but it adds to the adventure and helps us understand that these Transformers are a bit more than just war robots, which is what the first six movies struggled to capture.

Actually, the way they handled Bumblebee's character reminded of how they handled Baymax in "Big Hero 6." Cute, funny, but is nonetheless able to be just as threatening...

So, with that said, most of the action took place at the end, which was like 15-20 minutes of it...in an almost 2-hour movie.

I don't hate "Bumblebee," nor do I dislike it, but at the end I sort of just went "Well then...that was it."

I mean, I took the final fight for what it was, and it was pretty satisfying if you ask me, but I wish Bumblebee blew at least one or two other things in that movie.

Regardless, I enjoyed its difference, it was truly an adventurous sci-fi movie that feels a bit refreshing- especially after "Transformers: The Last Knight"...

As opposed to the previous movies, this one sets up any future movies quite nicely- as the other movies kind of just ended, not really making you wonder if there should be more (if we only knew in 2007 that they'd make more like so within the next 10 years).

4.85/5.
