I know this was probably be overdue, but I'm doing it now because I'm tired of people complaining about Jared Leto's Joker was "the fake Joker" in comparison to Heath Ledger's. Let me explain something to everyone...
First off, Leto did amazing as the Joker in Suicide Squad (even for the miniscule screen time he had). He was as spot-on as Ledger's was, in my opinion.
Second, people need to be educated. Everyone credits Ledger for "staying true" to the original Joker. Well, actually, that's wrong- in fact, Ledger's Joker was entirely different than the original. How you ask?:
1. Joker doesn't look the way he does because of paint. If anything, painting should be degrading! But, I guess that fits with the more, "clown"-like concept. But no, do you remember in Suicide Squad, the scene where Joker told Harley to jump in that pool of chemicals (yes, that's what it was)? Well, respective to the original comic origin, THAT same chemical waste is what Joker accidentally fell in, and the side effects were what made him "The Joker:" it paled his skin, colored his hair, and mentally affected him (obviously).
2. The Joker never cut his face to make the smile. He actually just likes to smile a lot, BUT- contrary to what I said, his lips are the only thing painted (occasionally he'd paint a smile past the lips) and sometimes eyeshadow to look like a clown (Both Ledger and Leto did this).
3. One main criticism of Leto's Joker is that he was too "ganster-like," in additon to his insanity- in comparison to Ledger's solely insane Joker...
Well, hate to break it you, but The Joker was actually originally created to be a gangster- sort of like Jack Nicholson's Joker. But the idea of a "gangster" has changed since Nicholson's time, and so with Leto's gang-affiliated Joker, not many people liked him because of the fact that gangs have a worse view today- so putting that on Joker is "wrong" to people. Think of it this way, say if Joker was created in this generation, and they wanted to go with the same view- it would be the same thing! We'd get Leto (then he'd get all the praise) and every other actor would have to follow suit, and thus have more people arguing and hopefully settling things like I'm doing....Besides, one of The Joker's many nicknames is The Prince Of Crime. "CRIME." Not clowns, Arkham Asylum, insanity altogether- crime....sounds pretty gangster to me!
4. Finally, people accuse Leto of all that junk in his teeth and tattoos...yeah I'll admit, I didn't enjoy him having all that stuff (original Joker never did, but a modern one had tattoos)...
But, one theory on that, is that since this was sort of an origins story for Joker, the tattoos could be from his former prison days. Eh. You could all fairly rant on that, I like it, but I'd be happy if they were somehow removed (jump in some chemicals again maybe? Haha).
___________________________So there, it's all settled. Even though Ledger's performance was amazing, so was Leto's. I loved them both for what they both put into the role, they both contributed what the other did and didn't, and...yeah. It works out, so STOP COMPLAINING PEOPLE!!
Fun Fact: Did you know Leto never broke his role since Day 1 of filming? What I mean is, he would film, go on break as The Joker, go back to his room as The Joker, and talk to his cast members as The Joker. Not once did he go back to reality as "Jared Leto."

*UPDATE: That stuff on Joker's teeth has a meaning as confirmed by the creators of "Suicide Squad!"
Remember when I told you it may seem that we're at the point where Batman had just lost his second Robin (Jason Todd) at the hands of Joker? Well, in the movie, during Harley Quinn's introduction, there's a quick second where a sentence pops up saying how she was an accomplice "with the Death Of Robin..."
The creators further explained this by connecting it with Joker's teeth- when Joker killed Robin, obviously Batman went after him, and actually beat his teeth out of him!
Ow...
Woulda been nice to see for the movie though...anyway,-
But yeah! Which may further explained why this Joker has the word "Damaged" tattooed on his forehead...
