When you think you know the ACTUAL Original Avengers Team....until I tell you it's actually-

Wasp
Hulk
Thor
Go ahead, say it. Where's Captain America? Well here's the thing, those guys listed above actually found the Avengers. Captain America was recruited afterwards-(Avengers #4, March 1964) thus, making him their first recruit ever. Now some may argue "Well why is he the leader then, hmmmmmmmm?! And why aren't the movies like that?! HMMMMMMM?!"
Well, then I argue back, because he may not actually be the first Avenger, but he was definitely the first superhero ever (respective to Marvel) and of course, who better to lead than him- especially given his leadership experience in the military?
And as for the movies....well because they can! If you ask me, they did mess up a lot in the series, but they played it off beautifully and made millions off it! And an even better excuse, there have been so many reimaginings and rewrites, that people don't care about what's the origin anymore! If you're a true fan, you know the real origin, you'll stick to it, but happily enjoy whatever twist the company wants to fling around! Get outta here with that!
But hey, this also explains why Iron Man is second-in-command, because he was the smartest founding member, ya know?
See why superheroes are awesome though? The stories are dynamic throughout time, it's....it's....Fantastic!
