I was sitting on the grass of the backyard as I watched my boyfriend of two years played tag with my six year old sister. She loves spending time with him. Every time they're around each other, it's like watching the love between a father and daughter. They're inseparable.
About a few months ago, my mom passed away in a tragic accident. My sister didn't take that very well and cried every night. We had a month to move out of the apartment because I didn't have a job to be able to pay for rent. I didn't bother calling our dad because what's the point of having him around if he's just gonna drink and probably beat the crap out of my little sister. Luckily, Seungcheol had the heart to take us in. I'm more than grateful to have him in my life.
"Lulu, Be careful where you're going. You might trip", I said to my sister.
She completely ignored me and continued to have fun with Seungcheol. He stopped running and placed his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath.
"Lulu, how are you not tired? We've been running around for ten minutes and I'm exhausted", Seungcheol said.
"That's because you're old", she giggled as she skipped around him.
I laughed at what she said, earning a small harmless glare from Seungcheol. He walked over to me and sat down on the grass to take a break. Lulu continued to run around and play with the toys that he bought for her.
"She hasn't been like this in a long time", I said to Seungcheol.
"She needed time to grieve. She's gonna be okay", he said, placing his hand on my thigh to give a light squeeze.
"What about you? Are you okay? I know it's been a few months but..you never really talk about it", he said, turning his head to look at me.
I watched Lulu laugh as she saw a butterfly land on her arm. I took a deep breath and cleared my throat so I could change the subject.
"Tomorrow's her birthday. She said she wants to have a small party. You know what theme she wants us to do? Ponies. Nothing but ponies. I just hope she doesn't ask for a real pony", I chuckled and shook my head.
"I can rent a pony if she wants one", he said.
"No. It'll cost too much. You do so much for us already anyways. It's fine", I said.
"I don't care about the price. If she wants a pony, I'll get her the pony. I don't want to upset her on her birthday", he said.
My sister ran towards us and jumped on Seungcheol's back. He groaned and gave her a piggy back ride, causing her to giggle.
"Lulu, do you want a pony for your birthday? Not as a permanent present. Just for the day", he asked her.
"Seungcheol-"
"Of course I want a pony! Oh my gosh, yaaaaay! I'm getting a pony for my birthday!", Lulu squealed excitedly.
Seungcheol smiled while I had a small frown on my face. I went back into the house and washed any dirty dishes that were left in the sink.
"Are you mad?"
I heard him behind me, getting closer by the second. I turned off the sink and dried my hands with a clean towel.
"Look, I appreciate that you're just trying to help. But I feel bad enough that we're staying here rent free. I can't get a job because no one wants to hire someone who has a record so you can't keep buying everything that we want. Sometimes we just have to hear bad news and we have to deal with it", I snapped.
"This isn't about the pony, is it?", he asked.
I took a deep breath while I placed my index finger and thumb on the bridge of my nose. He wanted to wrap his arms around me but I told him I was gonna go out to take care of a few things for Lulu's party.
I ordered the cake, balloons, bought some decorations and a present for Lulu. I only have ten dollars on me so all I could get was a small necklace that had her name on it. It's not much but I just hope she likes it.

"Happy birthday Lulu", I smiled as I woke her up.
She lightly groaned and covered her head with her blanket. I laughed and tried to uncover her face but she wouldn't budge.
"I bought cake", I said.
She quickly uncovered herself and ran out of the bedroom. I raised an eyebrow and followed her. Seungcheol had a horn attached to his forehead while he had a pink wig on his head. Might I add, a pink tutu around his waist.
"What the heck are you wearing?", I asked him.
"I'm a pony", he said.
"You're a unicorn silly", Lulu laughed.
"What's the difference?", he said, sticking out his tongue at her.
She continued to laugh, holding her stomach as she tried to calm down.
After she got out of the shower, she put on the dress I laid out for her and I did her hair. The rest of the day we spent our time playing games, eating cake, painting each other's faces and telling jokes. We sat down in the living room so she could open her presents.
"Oooo a necklace! With my name on it!", she smiled as I put the necklace on her.
"You like it?", I asked.
"Yes I do", she wrapped her arms around me and hugged me.
"Where's the pony? I thought you said I was getting a pony for my birthday", Lulu pouted at Seungcheol.
I silently sighed and sat all the way back onto the couch. Seungcheol noticed and apologized to her because he couldn't get a pony for her. Lulu was upset but she got over it quickly.
My sister and I headed towards her bedroom so she could get ready for bed. She wanted me to stay with her until she fell asleep so I laid down next to her and caressed her head.
"Do you miss mom?"
I looked down at her to find that she was looking up at the ceiling. She seemed to be concentrated on her own thoughts.
"I know you don't like talking about mom. I miss her. I sometimes even dream about her. She's still looking out for us you know. She's an angel looking down at us", she smiled before yawning and closed her eyes, falling asleep seconds later.
I bit my lip and sighed, knowing how Lulu feels. I carefully got off of her bed and pulled the blanket more up so it could cover her upper body, kissed her forehead and turned off the light.
When I walked into the bedroom I share with Seungcheol, he was already in bed, waiting for me.
"Did she fall asleep already?", he asked.
My eyes started tearing up and I tried to hold them back as I bit my lip but I failed miserably. He noticed and sat up from the bed.
"Are you okay?", he asked, earning a shake from my head.
"I miss her. I miss my mom. I miss her so much. I can't take it..", I cried.
Seungcheol got off of the bed and walked towards me to comfort me. He kept me in his embrace and whispered sweet things into my ear.
"It's okay to miss your mom. But you didn't need to keep that to yourself. You should've talked to me instead of making yourself suffer through this pain alone. I'm always gonna be here for you and Lulu. You two mean the world to me. And next time if you're feeling something like this, talk to me. I don't want to see you hurt", he said, kissing the top of my head.
After talking to Seungcheol about how I felt, I sighed in relief knowing that I finally got something off of my chest. Like I said before, I'm more than grateful to have him in my life.
