As I opened my locker, a bunch of notes fell out with words that are very cruel to say. Like always, I squished them into a ball and threw them away into the trash.
I try to avoid that as much as possible. I only have six more months until I graduate and then I won't deal with any of this crap anymore.
"Hey (y/n), what's up?"
My close friend Minghao walked up to me with a brown bag in his hand. Probably his lunch. He noticed the small frown on my face and instantly wrapped his arm around my shoulders.
"Can a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, an apple, and a small bag a chips fix that frown of yours? Seriously (y/n), take my lunch. You probably didn't eat", he said, lightly shaking the bag in front of me.
I wish it could fix it.
I didn't want him to get suspicious so I smiled and happily took his bag of lunch. He smiled in return and started talking about what happened to him as he was walking here. He always loved talking about his day.
We walked towards our next class, chemistry. I hated it but Minghao loves it so much that he always volunteers whenever someone needs help.
We sat down on our assigned seats. Unfortunately, last week the teacher assigned new seats and Minghao had to sit on the table behind me. His partner was the most popular girl in school and has been trying to impress Minghao for weeks now. She's only doing it because of me.
Her name is Jia. We used to be best friends back in elementary school until one day. There was a boy who was new to our class and had no clue where what was. Since I was the class president, I offered to help. I didn't know that Jia liked him so ever since then she's been against me and has made my life hell.
"Can you help me put this in there?"
I looked over my shoulder and noticed Jia being a little too comfortable towards Minghao. She wanted him to help her put sodium chloride in the beaker. Is she that weak that she can't even carry a glass cup filled with saltwater that doesn't even weigh over three pounds?
I rolled my eyes and continued doing the assignment.
After class, I waited for Minghao outside of the class. Usually he doesn't take this long. I was about to enter the class but I heard Jia's voice.
"So...Minghao..I was wondering if you'd like to go out with me today after school? My dad owns this famous restaurant so we don't have to pay anything. What do you say?", she asked.
I peeked over and noticed she had him pinned leaning against the desk. Her arms were on each side of him as she kept a smile on her face.
"Um..actually I have plans", he said.
"Really? With (y/n)? She's no good for you. Especially what she did to her little brother", she said.
My eyes widened. My hands were shaking.
"What do you mean? She doesn't have a brother", Minghao said.
Jia snickered and paced back and forth.
"Of course she didn't tell you. If she told you then that means you would've ran off and left her alone. She doesn't like being alone. She has issues. Three years ago, there was a party at my friends house and she invited her and her brother. She drank too much and drove home with her brother. The next day on the news her brother was dead and she moved away. She killed her brother because she was too careless to think about what would happen if she drove drunk. She's a murderer", Jia said.
I couldn't handle hearing anymore so I dropped my bag and ran home. I locked the door and slid down, hyperventilating. I brought my knees up to my chest and dug my face between my knees. I ended up blacking out.
About an hour later, I heard a knock on the door, causing me to jump. I shook my head and realized I was at home.
"(Y/n)? Are you there?"
I quickly stood up, shaking once again. I wasn't sure if I should open it.
"(Y/n)..I wanna talk to you. I have your bag. Please open up."
I kept quiet. I wanted him to go away but I also wanted for him to comfort me.
I slightly jumped as my phone began to ring. Minghao's name is on the screen.
"(Y/n), I know you're in there. I can hear your phone."
I hesitantly grabbed the doorknob and unlocked it, opening it afterwards. Minghao softly smiled at me and came inside. He placed my bag on the floor near my shoes and looked at me.
"You over heard..didn't you?", he asked.
I turned away and hugged myself, feeling as if I was back at that night when they told me my brother was dead.
"I'm sure it isn't true. I know she doesn't like you so she must be making it up", he said.
"...it's true...well half true..", I mumbled.
I can hear him getting closer to me. We sat down on the couch and he waited patiently for me to explain.
"What do you mean?", he asked.
"I was drinking but not to the point where my vision was impaired or I couldn't walk properly. I was fine. I drove back home with my brother except we didn't make it all the way. A car passed the red light and it hit us. My brother wasn't wearing his seatbelt and it hit his side so it killed him instantly. He was a year younger than me", I said, sighing.
Minghao couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had his eyes on me all the time while I explained.
"My parents thought it would be best if I went away for a while. So I stayed at my aunt's for a about a year. Got a job and saved money. Came back and bought a place to live while I go to school. I didn't think Jia would be going to the same school. She's been making me relive that moment all the time and I hate it. Can you just go out with her so she can leave me alone? She won't stop until she has you", I pleaded, looking at him with teary eyes.
He scoffed and shook his head as he looked away. He stood up and took out his phone to make a call. I couldn't hear who he was talking to or what he was saying but it worried me.
When he walked back towards me, he kneeled down and placed his hands on my knees."It's not your fault what happened. It could've happened to anyone. I understand why you didn't want to tell me. You just want to put it all behind. Look, she won't be bothering you about that anymore. My dad is a really good friend with the principal and I told him about it", he said.
I pushed his hands away, upset at the action he did. His eyes widened in shock.
"Why did you tell him?? Now the principal is gonna know and he's gonna kick me out of the school", I said.
"He won't. You weren't arrested because it wasn't your fault. Just let me help you on this. I promise nothing bad is gonna happen. Just trust me", he said softly.
I couldn't stay mad at him. Mostly because he's still here and not taking Jia's side. I let out a huge sigh and decided to let him help me.
He smiled and wrapped his arms around me.The next day, Jia was suspended for two weeks with a punishment of detention for a month. She didn't like it very much but had no choice but to obey. Minghao didn't let any one bother me about what happened years back. He stuck by side not like the others.
