It's been years since you and your father moved to a different country. He's been your rock and has been taking care of you ever since he split from your mom. Reason why is because all she cared about was her work. She gave no time to you. As a six year old, a girl needs both of her parents. Actually no matter what age.
You've always wanted to travel. You actually visited a few different cities from different countries but your father got sick so you had to move back with him after two years of traveling. Your father supported you no matter what and felt uneasy when he thought about letting his only daughter travel around the world without his supervision but he knew you had to grow up some day.
You smiled as you saw your dad sleeping on his bed, book that he was reading laid on his stomach while being clutched by his hand. You carefully removed the book and placed it on his desk. You covered him with a blanket and made sure he was comfortable before heading towards the front porch. You sat on the bench while holding your tea in your hands.
"Hey."
Your neighbor and close friend Hoshi walked up the steps and sat down next to you.
"Hey", you smiled back.
"How's your dad doing?", he asked.
"He's tired all the time. It's just the meds", you said, sighing.
"Hmm, don't worry too much. You got your best friend right here by your side" he smiled.
"Since when did you become my best friend?", you chuckled.
"Ever since your other friends bailed out on you because you were taking care of your father. They don't have brains in their heads. They don't know how to think", he said.
You smiled and leaned back onto the bench. You closed your eyes and felt the breeze run through your hair.
"I don't think my mom knows about my dad. For some reason...I want her to know. It just feels weird", you said.
"Then why don't you tell her?", he asked.
"I haven't seen her since I was six. What if she doesn't wanna see me?", you asked, slightly pouting.
"Then to hell with her. Come on, I'll go with you so you won't be alone", he stood up and crouched down to your level.
"You'd do that for me?", you asked.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I?", he said.
~~~
So a day later you were now on the plane with Hoshi sitting next to you. You were sleeping while he stared out the window of the plane.
"Huh...I thought there would be two beds", you mumbled as you two walked into the room.
"I can go back and ask the receptionist to put me in a different room. I don't want you feeling uncomfortable", Hoshi said.
"N-No it's fine. Each of us paid half for this room. You'll just be paying more. Really it's fine", you softly smiled and walked in.
You were getting hungry so you and Hoshi headed towards a restaurant near the hotel.
"I don't even know how I'm gonna tell her", you said.
"You'll be fine. If you have trouble, I'll help you", Hoshi said as he ate his food.
"Do you think she'll recognize me?", you asked.
"Your her daughter. Of course she will", he said.
After eating, you headed towards the place where your mom works. The building still looked the same but newer.
"I can't do it", you said, hesitating to walk in.
"Yes you can. I believe in you", Hoshi smiled as he stood in front of you.
You nodded and took a deep breath before heading into the building while Hoshi followed behind you. You looked into every room until you found her looking at a tablet and some papers on a table. She was talking to someone even when you got closer.
"Excuse me?", you said, quite in a small voice.
The person left the room as your mother looked up at you.
"Hmm..what are you doing here? I thought you moved with your father to get away from me", she said, glancing at you before looking back at her work.
"Well after I graduated I started traveling until-"
"Traveling? Huh..that's a waste of time", she said.
"..dad's sick", you said.
"And you're here because you need money? No wonder. You could've gotten a real job instead of traveling so you can have money of your own and not ask me for mine", she said.
"..I didn't come here to ask you for money. I just..wanted you to know-"
"And I know now so you can leave", she said, looking through her papers.
You bit on your lip and began to walk away until Hoshi spoke up.
"Are you really that much of a terrible person?", he asked, disgusted.
"Hoshi it's fine", you said.
"No it isn't. How can you just be so arrogant?? (Y/n) traveled hours to see you and tell you that her father is sick and you don't even care. How can you think she came here for your money?? She worked three jobs to pay for her dad's medication. She sometimes had to stay up all night to make sure that her dad is still alive. Even though she's really afraid of how much time her dad has left, she tries to keep a smile on her face. I've known her for six months and I find her incredibly amazing. Even when I met her I instantly thought she was amazing. How can you not see that? Oh yeah because you're too invested in your work. You don't deserve to have her as a daughter. She can find someone else who can love her and treat her like family. They'll be more of a family than you", he said before grabbing your hand and headed out of the building.
You could tell he was really upset. You tried getting his attention but he kept walking. I pulled on his hand to make him stop.
"Hoshi you need to calm down", you said.
"I'm sorry (y/n). She just got me angry. She's such a horrible person", he said, combing his hair back.
"I know she is. But it really doesn't matter to me what she thinks. My dad has me. He doesn't need her. I just wanted her to know...but thanks for saying that", you smiled.
"I meant it", he softly smiled.
~~~
You went back to the hotel room to get some sleep. You were on one side of the bed while Hoshi slept on the other. You couldn't really sleep. Hoshi senses it so he turned over to face you and asked if you were okay. Knowing your father was really sick, he didn't say anything else and just hugged her until she fell asleep.
