You were one of the most competitive people in school, more specifically in sports. I was captain of the soccer team..until Mingyu, one of your worst competitors, took that spot from you. Some of the sports in school were co-ed which you hate. If it wasn't for Mingyu, you would've been the captain.
He always seems to get on your nerves, no matter what he did. Everything seems like a competition to you when it came to Mingyu. You were always the first one to arrive to meetings, the first to change and wait near the benches, the first to practice, and the first to always answer any of the coach's questions.
You didn't care if people thought you were a suck up. All you wanted was the be at the top of success.
"Alright kids, as you know every other season we change captains. You know the routine. For those who want to become captain, you must compete against each other. I'm sure Mingyu will be the one to get the spot three times in a row", the coach laughed while clapping.
"Not this time", you muttered under your breath.
Mingyu, as he stood next to you, chuckled as he heard your comment. He shook his head and began to stretch.
"Coach, do you think I can get some extra time to practice? I wanna make sure I'm really prepared so I can make captain", you said.
"Sorry (y/n), practice will end early today. You must practice on your own time", the coach said.
You groaned and went over towards the benches. You sat down and fixed your shoelaces.
"Just give it up. You know I'm gonna be captain once again", Mingyu smirked while sitting next to you.
"Not this time. I have practiced hard. More than you. I'll get that spot", you muttered, glaring at him.
You wished you can punch that smug look off his face. You walked away and began to practice.
~~~
"Alright, Like always we'll have a few obstacles for you to run. It'll be five rounds. Who ever can keep up will stay on the team. The last round will be about who's gonna become captain. Good luck", the coach said.
You were prepared and ready to beat Mingyu. You were tired of being ridiculed.
The first round you had to kick the ball into the goal three times. If it gets blocked you had to try again but luckily you were good at it. You won the first round.
The other rounds you had no luck. You and Mingyu were tied. 2-2. All you needed was to pass the last round to become captain.
You face Mingyu as the coach explained the rules. This year it was much different. It was all about speed. You had to kick the ball all the way across the field in under 15 seconds. All while going through obstacles. You got into position and waited for the coach to blow the whistle. When he did, you quickly sprinted while kicking the ball.
Mingyu had good handling on the ball but you were fast. You were ahead of him. You can almost taste success. You were so close..until you ended up twisting your ankle. You fell hard onto the ground, yelled in pain.
Mingyu hadn't noticed that you hurt yourself. All he was focused on was winning. Once he kicked the ball into the goal and raised his arms in victory. When he looked back at you, he gasped as you were crying on the floor.
He quickly ran over towards you and carried you to the nurse's office. While the nurse helped you, Mingyu waited outside. She had wrapped gauze around your ankle and told you to keep weight off of it. When she left, Mingyu entered.You avoided him and tried to stand up but he told you not to.
"Here to gloat? If so, I don't wanna hear it", you mumbled as you looked away.
"You twisted your ankle. I don't count that as a win", he said.
"Whatever", you muttered.
"Want me to drive you home? I know you come in the bus", he said.
"No thanks. I know you just wanna make fun of me. You're captain now so leave me alone", you said, crossing your arms over your chest.
"I'm not leaving", he said.
"Jeez this is what I hate about you. You're so stubborn", you said.
"I don't think you hate me", he softly smirked.
"Yes I do. I can't stand your presence. You make me want to hit you. When I see you, I get a headache...and stop smiling you creep before I slap it off of y-", your eyes widened as you felt his lips against yours.
When he pulled away, you brought your hand up and touched your lips. He kept a close distance, a shy smile replacing his cocky one.
"What the hell did you do that for??", you asked, hitting his arm.
"Because I wanted to. And also to shut you up. But mostly because I wanted to", he smirked.
"Great. Are you done playing with my feelings? If so, leave so I can go home", you said.
"Who said I was playing with your feelings? Don't you know why I kept competing against you? I like you. I think it's cute how you get angry and competitive. Your nose flares up", he chuckled.
"I don't find it funny", you said.
"Alright alright, I'm sorry. But I mean it when I said I like you. I was gonna ask you out this Friday", he said.
"...out to where exactly?", you asked curiously, still trying to sound mad.
"The restaurant near here that opened up a few weeks ago", he said.
"Are you serious?? I've always wanted to try out the food there! But the food is so expensive and I-....I mean..whatever", you shrugged your shoulders.
He chuckled and got closer to you, staring into your eyes. His hand intertwined with yours and smiled.
"So? What do you say? Dinner. You and me. Friday night", he said.
"I guess..since you owe from all those times you humiliated me", you said.
"Then that means we have to have more dates in order for me to be clear. Come on, I'll take you home", he smiled and handed you the crutches that the nurse left you.
"Wait what about coach? You have to talk to him about being captain", you said.
"They already have a captain. It's you. I can't simply take that spot. You've worked harder than me. Anyways, I sucked as captain", he said, causing you to laugh.
"You got that right", you chuckled.
