"What are we? Us?"
His voice was soft, just above a whisper. Barely audible above the waves that crashed against the cliff. He looked to you with eyes heavy with exhaustion, a splattering of blood and dirt still clinging to his face. He didn't think you'd heard him. Your eyes ever set on the horizon. You glowed in the golden light of the sun, it's heat stinging your shoulders that were free from the heavy cape you'd flung aside. Your arm rested against a bent knee while the sea breeze pushed your hair from your shoulders as you remained silent.
"Unfortunates," you finally answered. "Thrust onto the wrong path at too young an age." You furrowed your brow and shook your head slightly. "We're harbingers of pain and suffering." You turned to Kylo, the thick streaks of blood on your face giving your eyes a frightening intensity. Your voice softened into a breathy sound infused with regret. "And one day we're going to pay for it."
"So you regret the choices you've made?" He asked. He pulled his eyes away from you, turning them to the water, afraid to hear your answer.
"I regret every choice I've ever made. You are the only one I would make again." A sigh escaped his lips and he looked back to you.
"But you wish to go down a different path?"
"No," you told him after a moment of contemplation. "I have made my choices and am committed to them." You looked back out to the horizon, but your eyes seemed to look at something beyond reach. "I say I regret my decisions but I still made them. And I've done nothing to change my course. I can pretend that I'm a good person deep down but it's a lie. No good person would have done what I've done in the first place. Or continue to do them as I do now.
"The universe set us the paths we were meant for, Kylo. The sooner we realize that, and recognize the fact that we can't change it, the easier it will be."
"My path has been conflicting," Kylo said after a moment. "But I am grateful for it, if nothing else, it gave me you."
You turned back to him, a sad smile on your face.
"Maybe that's the universe's apology for giving you such a heavy destiny. Or maybe it's just a cruel joke on us. Forcing us to go down a path of blood and betrayal because it was the only one where we are together."
He moved behind you, resting his chin on your shoulder and wrapping his arms around your waist.
"It doesn't matter the reason, we're still here. Together. Any doubts I've been having of the future can be put to rest as long as I know you will stand by my side."
You turned to him and brought your hands to his face.
"I will always be by your side. Snoke himself couldn't tear me away."
"Then we will continue with our plans, "he said, taking your hands in his. "And pay for our decisions. Together."
